DRIFT

At CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas, the spotlight was firmly on the forthcoming film One Battle After Another, as key cast members Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, and Teyana Taylor took the stage to discuss this highly anticipated project. Directed by the acclaimed Paul Thomas Anderson, the film is slated for a theatrical release on September 26, 2025.

A Modern Take on Pynchon’s ‘Vineland’

One Battle After Another is reportedly a contemporary adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland. The narrative centers on a group of former revolutionaries who reunite after 16 years to rescue a comrade’s daughter from a re-emerged adversary. DiCaprio portrays Bob Ferguson, a civil rights activist drawn back into action, while Taylor plays his former partner and mother of his child, portrayed by newcomer Chase Infiniti. Hall’s role, though not extensively detailed, is integral to the ensemble.

Insights from the Cast

During the CinemaCon panel, DiCaprio described the project as “an incredibly epic movie” with significant “scope and scale,” and praised Anderson as “one of the most unique talents of our time.” He highlighted Anderson’s collaborative approach, noting the director’s openness to actor improvisation.

Regina Hall emphasized the film’s blend of humor and emotion, stating, “It’s humorous, it’s funny, but it’s also heartfelt.”

Teyana Taylor provided insight into her character, describing her as “always in survival mode” and “very misunderstood,” adding, “I can’t wait for you to meet this character.”

A Stellar Ensemble Cast

The film boasts a distinguished cast, including Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, Alana Haim, Wood Harris, and Shayna McHayle. Penn takes on the role of Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, the central antagonist whose resurgence prompts the protagonists’ reunion.

Production Journey

Filming commenced in early 2024 across various Californian locales, notably Humboldt County and Sacramento. The production transformed local landmarks to align with the film’s setting, generating considerable local interest. The project, with a budget estimated between $115 and $140 million, marks Anderson’s most ambitious endeavor to date.

Anticipation Builds

The unveiling of the film’s trailer has heightened anticipation, offering glimpses of intense action sequences and the complex dynamics among characters. The collaboration between DiCaprio and Anderson, coupled with the film’s thematic depth, positions One Battle After Another as a potential highlight of the cinematic calendar.

As the release date approaches, audiences eagerly await how Anderson’s interpretation of Pynchon’s work will resonate on screen, promising a blend of action, satire, and character-driven storytelling.
