ASICS Buries Its Y3K Runner in Earth Tones for the GEL-KINETIC 2.0’s Latest Rel

The retro futurist profile trades chrome for olive canvas, landing August 7 as the fourth colorway in its young life.

ASICS’ own storefronts and select retail partners on August 7, priced at $250 in the United States and €240 across the brand’s European sites. The colorway is officially named Obsidian Grey/Olive Canvas, a name that undersells just how thoroughly the olive tone takes over the shoe. It is a unisex rel sized the way ASICS has handled every prior GEL-KINETIC 2.0 colorway so far, and it lands through both ASICS’ own site and a small set of specialty retailers in Europe carrying the exact SKU.

What separates this launch from the profile’s earlier three colorways is tone rather than construction. Where Pure Silver lean into a chrome, almost liquid metal finish and Lichen Green paired its base with a loud purple, Obsidian Grey/Olive Canvas plays it comparatively restrained: a dark charcoal grey holds down the mesh and structural cage, while the olive shade spreads across the overlays, midsole wrap, and branding in a way that reads more utilitarian than futuristic at first glance, even though the shoe underneath it hasn’t changed.

The shoe is built leather free, which has quietly become one of its selling points. A fine mesh forms the base of the upper, with synthetic and synthetic leather overlays molded on top in the deeper obsidian grey, while the olive canvas shade washes over the midsole cage and a run of the panel work. A textile lining sits underneath, the branding is rendered in synthetic material rather than stitched or embroidered, and a rubber outsole handles traction. None of that reads as flashy on paper, but it is the kind of spec sheet that lets a $250 sportstyle shoe hold up to actual daily wear rather than sitting in a box.

Underfoot, the shoe carries a Scutoid GEL pod that ASICS repositioned directly beneath the foot for this generation, a change the brand says was informed by foot pressure testing rather than aesthetics alone. That pod sits inside an FF BLAST PLUS midsole, itself wrapped in a TPU TRUSSTIC cage, the combination doing double duty as both a cushioning system and a structural exoskeleton that gives the shoe its sculpted, almost armored profile.

ASICS has leaned on GEL cushioning since 1986, when the technology first showed up on the Japan exclusive ASICS Freaks before making its way onto the GT-II shortly after, and the brand still frames every new sportstyle release, this one included, as an extension of that same research lineage rather than a standalone gimmick. The TRUSSTIC cage, for its part, isn’t new either. It’s a stability piece that’s shown up across ASICS’ running catalog for years, here reworked into something closer to armor than a hidden support structure, wrapping visibly around the midsole instead of staying tucked away.

The technical language pulls directly from two archive names: the original GEL-KINETIC line and the GEL-FRANTIC series, both of which get credit on ASICS’ own product pages as the aesthetic source material. Neither of those archive shoes was a mainstream hit in its original run, which makes the callback feel less like a straightforward retro reissue and more like ASICS digging through its own back catalog for shapes nobody else has gotten to yet.

The more immediate ancestor, though, is the GEL-QUANTUM KINETIC, which debuted early in 2026 and itself borrowed from GEL-NIMBUS, GEL-KUSHON, and GEL-KINSEI. That shoe was pitched around experimental engineering and day functionality, a shoe built for commuting and standing for long stretches as much as anything athletic. The 2.0 pushes past that pitch into something closer to a proper standalone franchise, complete with its own release calendar, its own reworked upper, and, now, its own convincer.

The GEL-KINETIC 2.0 debuted this April in Pure Silver/Blue Coast, a metallic take that leaned hard into the aughts nostalgia the design lang is built around, before following it with a Clay Grey/Black colorway and a Lichen Green/Beniimo Purple pairing. In between, the shoe picked up a collaborator: HIDDEN.NY, the New York label with a running history of ASICS linkups, put its own spin on the sil for a Tokyo pop up that ran May 23 and 24, focus on the same layered upper and Scutoid GEL setup that defines the retail line rather than reworking the shoe wholesale.

Obsidian Grey/Olive Canvas is the most muted of the four solo colorways to date, closer in spirit to a field jacket than a running shoe, and it arrives as ASICS keeps expanding a lineup that started the year as a single silver sample. Four months in, the GEL-KINETIC 2.0 has already outpaced most new sportstyle introductions in terms of colorway volume, and it’s become one of the more active stories in ASICS’ lifestyle wing this year, running alongside continued attention on the brand’s GEL-NYC and GEL-1130 lines and its ongoing run of pairs with partners like Kith.
