Sixteen seasons. 962 games. Instagram on Wednesday. Sharks last. O’Reilly, Benn, Bogosian still bare-faced.

Ryan Reaves posted the end on Wednesday, 16 September 2026. Sixteen NHL seasons. 962 regular-season games. 66 goals, 74 assists, 140 points on the league sheet. 113 playoff games, nine points. Seven clubs: St. Louis Blues (419 of those games), Pittsburgh, Vegas, New York Rangers, Minnesota, Toronto, San Jose Sharks. Last year: 50 games in San Jose, three goals. Age 39. Fifth-round pick, 156th overall, 2005, out of the Brandon Wheat Kings. Winnipeg-born.

The visor sentence traveled with the retirement. After Reaves, three skaters are still listed without one: Ryan O’Reilly, Jamie Benn, Zach Bogosian. A March file had named those four together. One chair emptied.

Reaves was drafted to be heavy. He said so in the letter: football or hockey, the draw was laying people out. The NHL sheet is not a scorer’s sheet. 140 points in 962 nights is a fourth-line math. The job was corners, fights, and the minutes after a teammate got hit. Penalty minutes sit in the thousand-plus range depend on the tracker. Hits are listed near the top of the historical pile in some counts (3,225 in one Canadian wrap). Use the official game total first. 962 is the number that does not argue.

Vegas 2018 is the playoff card people keep. Two goals in ten games, a Game 5 winner against Winnipeg in the West final, then a Final loss to Washington. That is the closest the résumé comes to a parade. St. Louis was the long home. Seven seasons. The later stops (Pittsburgh, New York, Minnesota, Toronto, San Jose) are the itinerant half of an enforcer’s last decade, when teams still wanted the idea of a heavy winger and not always the minutes.

The league mandated visors for incoming players years ago. Grandfathered veterans could stay bare. The list shrank until it was a trivia question. Reaves told a March interviewer he would have liked to be last. He also named younger men still play without one. O’Reilly, Benn, Bogosian are the names that remain in the September wrap. Three is not zero. Zero is a season that has not arrived.

He dropped the visor before a Blues preseason, he said, because Cam Janssen and David Backes told a kid who wanted to be a tough guy that the shield was not the look. That is clubhouse anthropology from 2005 logic. The league moved. The holdouts did not. Retirement is how the list shortens now. Not a memo.

Eye injuries and near-misses are in every visor essay. They did not put a shield on these four. They will not put one on a retired player.

That last joke is the job describing itself. Safer corners is what an enforcer claims on the way out. The corners will be staffed by different bodies, different rules, different tolerance for the old job. The letter does not settle either that is loss or progress. It settles that Reaves is done counting games.
