DRIFT

Salomon’s story begins in 1947 in Annecy, France, at the foot of the French Alps. François Salomon, alongside his wife and son Georges, started in a small metalworking workshop producing ski edges. What began as a modest family operation quickly expanded as the post-war skiing boom took hold. By the 1950s, Salomon pioneered innovations like toe pieces for ski bindings, and by the 1970s and 1980s, it dominated winter sports with groundbreaking ski boots and bindings.

The transition to footwear came naturally in the 1990s. Drawing on decades of alpine expertise, Salomon applied its engineering prowess to hiking boots, trail running shoes, and mountaineering gear. Technologies honed for extreme conditions—stability on icy slopes, traction through mud and rock—translated seamlessly to trail running. Today, while skiing remains part of its DNA, Salomon’s focus has shifted dramatically toward trail running, hiking, and lifestyle footwear. Less than 10% of sales now come from winter sports, reflecting its successful pivot to year-round performance and street style.

This evolution mirrors the brand’s ethos: “Invented in the Mountains, Reinvented in Paris.” Salomon’s Advanced Shoe Factory in Annecy continues to push boundaries with robotic production and sustainable practices, while collaborations with fashion houses like MM6 Maison Margiela, Palace, and The Soloist have elevated its profile on global runways.

The XT series stands as a cornerstone of Salomon’s offering, embodying the brand’s trail-running legacy with modern crossover appeal. Launched in 2012, the XT-6 was originally engineered as a premier trail runner for ultramarathons. It features the Agile Chassis System (ACS) for stability, Contagrip outsoles for traction, and dual-density EVA midsoles for balanced cushioning. The XT-4 OG nods to early 2000s designs, while the XT-6 GTX adds GORE-TEX protection. These models achieved cult status through technical excellence and fashion adoption.

Within this lineage, the XT-Whisper emerges as a lighter, more versatile expression. Originally introduced in 2009 as a women’s-specific trail shoe—a counterpart to the XT-Hawk—it has been reissued as a unisex model. This revival blends archive heritage with contemporary styling, making it accessible and appealing across genders. At approximately 10 oz (around 280–315g per shoe depending on size), the XT-Whisper lives up to its name—lightweight and whisper-quiet on the foot while delivering serious performance.

The XT-Whisper distinguishes itself through provocative textures and layered details. The upper combines rich materials—breathable mesh with synthetic overlays—for a dynamic, multi-dimensional look. A standout feature is the unique wavy SensiFit™ application that circles the vamp, creating visual contrast with matte and shiny finishes. This design not only elevates aesthetics but enhances the secure, customized fit.

SensiFit™ technology cradles the foot from midsole to lacing system, providing a snug yet comfortable hold without pressure points. Paired with Salomon’s iconic Quicklace™ system—one-pull tightening with a lace pocket—it delivers instant, precise adjustment in seconds. An anti-debris tongue adds protection against dirt and small particles, ideal for trails or urban environments where grit accumulates.

The overall silhouette feels sleeker and softer than the more rigid XT-6, with squiggly panels and reflective accents that give it a refined, almost designer edge. The drop is 11mm, striking a balance between cushioning under the heel and a natural forefoot feel. This makes the shoe versatile for everything from light trail runs to all-day city walking.

True to XT tradition, the XT-Whisper incorporates the Agile Chassis System (ACS). This internal chassis works in harmony with the EnergyCell midsole foam to provide stability, dampening, and efficient energy return. While not the plushest cushioning available in modern running shoes, it offers a responsive, ground-connected feel suited to technical terrain. The chassis locks in the heel, reducing unwanted movement and enhancing confidence on uneven surfaces.

The OrthoLite® diecut sockliner upgrades interior comfort with cushioning, breathability, and durability. Users consistently note the immediate comfort, with no lengthy break-in period required. The shoe feels supportive yet lightweight, making it suitable for daily wear, travel, or active exploration.

Traction defines the XT-Whisper. The outsole draws influence from models like the XT-Pathway, featuring Mud Contagrip®—a compound optimized for loose, soft, rugged, and uneven surfaces. Deep chevron lugs with multi-directional grip penetrate mud, gravel, and loose dirt effectively while maintaining performance on harder packed trails or pavement.

Reviewers highlight the outsole’s sharpness and reliability, often comparing the lug feel to a hiking boot without added bulk. It performs confidently on mixed terrain—wet rocks, forest paths, or rainy city streets. While best suited for lighter trail use rather than extreme mountaineering, it handles daily conditions with ease.

The XT-Whisper functions as a true hybrid. Its lightweight construction—noticeably lighter than many XT counterparts—and breathable upper make it ideal for warm-weather runs, hikes, or travel. Breathability is high due to the mesh, though it is not fully waterproof; water ingress should be expected in heavy rain or deep puddles.

Runners and walkers benefit from the secure fit during longer efforts, with the ACS and Quicklace system minimizing fatigue. The 11mm drop and balanced cushioning support a natural gait while offering sufficient protection from impact. Durability remains strong, with reinforcement in high-wear zones.

On the street, the XT-Whisper aligns naturally with the “gorpcore” aesthetic—technical yet refined. It integrates easily into casual wardrobes, from wide trousers to shorts or more elevated looks. Colorways range from understated neutrals like Vanilla Ice and Almond Milk to bolder variations, offering flexibility in styling.

The XT-Whisper suits trail runners seeking a lighter alternative, hikers wanting everyday adaptability, and urban wearers who value performance-driven design. It runs relatively true to size but may feel narrow through the arch, making sizing considerations relevant for wider feet.

Styling remains intuitive—wide-leg pants, cargo silhouettes, denim, or travel-ready fits all align naturally with the shoe’s form. Maintenance is equally straightforward: clean the outsole after muddy use and allow the shoe to air-dry.

Salomon continues to invest in responsible production, incorporating recycled materials where possible, reducing harmful chemicals, and maintaining localized manufacturing. The XT-Whisper reflects this direction—built with durability in mind to extend product lifespan and reduce turnover.

From its 2009 origins as a women’s-specific trail model to its current unisex revival, the XT-Whisper captures Salomon’s ability to evolve without abandoning its technical roots. Lightweight, stable, and visually distinct, it operates with quiet confidence—performing across terrain while adapting seamlessly to contemporary life.
