DRIFT

Roosevelt Island has long been known for its sweeping views of Manhattan and historical landmarks, but it is now the site of a striking and immersive art installation: “Flower Market” by contemporary artist CJ Hendry. Situated within the serene confines of FDR Four Freedoms State Park, this exhibition stands out not only for its scale but also for its imaginative exploration of nature, beauty, and craftsmanship. In connection with global luxury beauty brand Clé de Peau Beauté and the Four Freedoms Park Conservancy, Hendry has transformed the park into an unexpected oasis of color, texture, and interaction.

At the heart of the exhibition is a 120-foot by 40-foot greenhouse filled with 100,000 plush flowers, each crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Unlike typical botanical gardens or outdoor flower shows, “Flower Market” is a wholly artificial, yet vibrantly lifelike representation of nature. The plush blooms encourage visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of the flowers, invoking a sense of wonder akin to stepping into a dreamlike meadow.

Hendry’s choice to use plush flowers speaks volumes about the intersection of nature and human artifice. These hand-crafted flowers are soft, exaggerated, and almost cartoonish, yet their beauty lies in their uncanny ability to replicate the essence of real blooms. Visitors are invited to touch and explore these flowers, fostering a sense of play and interaction that many art installations discourage. By blending the tactile with the visual, Hendry gives people the freedom to engage deeply with her work, much like how Emerson’s quote reflects the human tendency to overlook the delicate details in the world around us.

This engagement with the floral world is underscored by Hendry’s blend with Clé de Peau Beauté, a luxury beauty brand known for incorporating natural botanicals into its skincare products. The partnership reinforces the connection between nature and human design, with the installation serving as an artistic embodiment of the brand’s ethos: transforming the essence of natural beauty into something refined and luxurious. Just as Clé de Peau Beauté’s products seek to enhance the skin’s natural radiance, Hendry’s artificial flowers enhance and idealize nature’s beauty, offering an interpretation that is more lush, exaggerated, and refined than the original.

What’s particularly compelling about “Flower Market” is its location at the FDR Four Freedoms State Park. The park, which is a memorial to Franklin D. Roosevelt and his famous “Four Freedoms” speech, represents ideals of freedom of speech, worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Hendry’s installation interacts with this powerful historical context by offering a temporary reprieve from the demands of modern life. In an era dominated by technology and fast-paced living, “Flower Market” provides a tranquil, almost whimsical space to reflect on nature, creativity, and beauty. In this way, the installation speaks to the freedom to engage with the world in a more mindful, sensory way—something that is often neglected in everyday life.

By turning Roosevelt Island into a floral wonderland, CJ Hendry’s “Flower Market” is more than just an art installation—it is an invitation to pause, engage, and reconnect with the beauty of the natural world, even if it is through an artificial lens. Through its bright colors, plush textures, and immersive experience, the installation transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, challenging us to see flowers—and perhaps even life itself—with new eyes.
