The AWMR Wading Jacket from the connection between AFFXWRKS and Mountain Research represents a new chapter in hybrid utility design. Combining London’s forward-thinking workwear sensibility with Japan’s outdoor craftsmanship, the piece merges technical functionality and street-ready style into a compact, architectural silhouette that feels both utilitarian and experimental.

Potentially, the flow reflects each brand’s design language. AFFXWRKS, known for its “new utility” approach, continues to reinterpret workwear through refined tailoring and technical materials. Mountain Research, guided by Hiroshi Fujiwara’s former collaborator Setsumasa Kobayashi, infuses outdoor performance with philosophical minimalism. Together, they channel the spirit of exploration—physical and conceptual—into a garment that bridges mountaineering gear and metropolitan wearability.

The AWMR Wading Jacket’s cropped frame and precise construction set it apart from typical outerwear. Crafted from a waterproof, rubber-coated stretch shell composed of polyester and polyurethane, it balances flexibility with structure. Its surface carries a subtle sheen, enhancing texture under shifting light—a detail that speaks to its visual sophistication. The jacket’s functional attributes, including six front pockets and a large rear storage pocket, are derived from classic wading and fishing gear. However, these utilitarian elements are refined through AFFXWRKS’s ergonomic patterning and Mountain Research’s signature restraint, creating a silhouette that is at once utilitarian and sculptural.

A hood featuring an adjustable face-covering flap adds protection and visual intrigue, while elastic toggles at the hem and cuffs ensure adaptability to weather and layering. The “Soft Black” colorway underscores the jacket’s understated confidence, aligning with contemporary streetwear’s tonal minimalism. The piece is produced in Japan, emphasizing material integrity and artisanal precision—an essential marker of quality in both collaborators’ worlds.

From a styling perspective, the AWMR Wading Jacket thrives in juxtaposition. It complements wide-leg technical trousers or tailored cargos, playing with proportion and movement. Its cropped profile invites layering—over longline shirts, fine knits, or even fleece—to create depth and texture. The large rear pocket offers a visual anchor, while the rubberized fabric commands attention through its tactile appeal. Whether shot against industrial architecture or natural terrain, the jacket performs equally well, emphasizing its dual urban-outdoor identity.

The AWMR Wading Jacket sits within the premium outerwear bracket, appealing to collectors and design-minded consumers alike. It is less about branding and more about construction and form, catering to an audience that values understated complexity. With limited availability and production, the jacket gains collectible potential, much like earlier Mountain Research pieces that have become sought after among Japanese archive enthusiasts.
