Nike’s Square Toe Air Force 1 keeps the 1982 panels, Swoosh and perforations, then swaps the rounded front for a flat, hard-edged toe box.

The Air Force 1 has carried a rounded toe since Bruce Kilgore designed it for Nike and it reached stores in late October 1982. This year the front of the shoe was redrawn as a wide, flat rectangle, first shown in Paris during June’s fashion week, and some coverage of that preview writes the name as Squair Toe, a nod to the Air unit. The black and white pairs now surfacing are the plainest versions of the idea, which leaves the toe as the only thing there is to look at.

Signal. What happened: a black and a white colorway of the square-toe Air Force 1 have emerged as a two-tincture pair, following the model’s June preview in Paris. Exact object: the Nike Air Force 1 Square Toe, a low-top with a flattened toe box, in black and in white, with no style codes or retail price confirmed. When and where: a Japan market release notice lists the pair for 2026, while coverage from the Paris preview splits between Holiday 2026 and spring 2027, and Nike has not confirmed a date or a Japan rel. Source: a Japan market rel notice, set against the June Paris preview. Why it matters: the shape change reaches the most basic colorways of Nike’s best-selling shoe, so the sil itself becomes the news. Earlier: the Shox TL SE and Air Jordan Ultra pieces covered other Nike sil being reworked in 2026.

Named for the presidential aircraft and the first Nike basketball shoe to use Nike Air, the model rode on a lowered rear heel that Kilgore borrowed from a Nike hiking boot called the Approach, and at launch Nike said it cushioned shock 30 percent better than a standard shoe. By late 1985 it was selling in limited colorways through a Shoe of the Month program at a handful of stores, which carried it out of the gym and into day wear, and Nike now describes it as its best-selling shoe of all time. The round toe came along for all of it. Nike’s own history of the model notes that it barely changed through the 1980s and 1990s.

scope

Nike changed one thing and left the rest alone. The panel layout still reads as an Air Force 1, the toe-box perforations are in place, the Swoosh sits where it always has, and the lace dubrae stays. What moves is the front: the tip loses its roundness and spreads sideways, and the toe reinforcement and the sole outline follow the new shape, so the squared balance is clearest from above. At the tip it reads closer to a loafer or a boot than a basketball shoe.

The black pair is dark from laces to outsole. Its toe surround has a gloss the grained upper lacks, so the finish difference shows as light moves across the shoe. The white pair makes the same shape look brighter, and with the flat tip peeking out at the hem of a pant leg, it is the easier of the two to spot when worn. Neither leans on a loud palette or a pattern, which sets both apart from the busier pairs shown alongside them in Paris.

show

The black and white pairs were not the only square toes in Paris. The preview also showed a Triple White pair beside plaid builds, including a red and blue version, and suede Western-leaning versions with cowboy boot toe flourishes, gemstone lace dubraes and thick woven laces. Those pairs push the model well past the quiet end of its range, and they make clear that Nike treated the flat front as a platform for several looks rather than a single colorway. The same preview carried an early look at new ACG Goadome Low colorways and a laceless Air Max 97, so the Air Force 1 was one of several archive shapes being reworked at once.

extend

Square fronts on sports shoes are not new to Nike. Martine Rose, the London designer who started her label in 2007, turned the Shox R4 into the Shox MR4 mule, with raised heel columns and a square toe that nods to dress shoes. Rose framed it around the pre-game presentation of women footballers, a sports shoe meant to carry the polish of dress footwear. It was shown on her Spring/Summer 2023 runway in June 2022 and went on sale through her own site on July 7 that year, in women’s sizing at $220 in black and white, with a second round of colorways following in 2023. Her label’s own biography describes its approach as an investigation of proportion and silhouette.

The shape has company elsewhere. The adidas Stan Smith SQ squares off the front of another mainstream classic while keeping its white and green scheme, the perforated Three Stripes and the Trefoil heel branding, with the outsole reshaped to follow the new toe, so Nike is not the only brand testing the idea. Nike’s own preview carried it further on the Air Max 90, where a volt green sample pushed the squared-off look across the whole shoe, down to an arrow-shaped Swoosh and a polygonal sole, rather than only the toe.

No release date or price has come from Nike for the Square Toe. The Japan market notice behind this pair lists 2026, which does not match everything else on record. An earlier Japan market listing for the shoe, from June, gave late spring to summer 2027. Coverage from the Paris preview split as well: one account pointed to a Triple White debut in Holiday 2026 with further colorways in 2027, brown in spring and sail in summer, other reports expected Triple White and Triple Black to lead, and others pointed to spring 2027 for the start of the line. Style codes have not surfaced, and no Japan release has been listed. Nike’s own US site lists the standard Air Force 1 ’07 at $115, the nearest reference point until a Square Toe price announced.
