OTW by Vans Old Skool 36 “Knot” (Vans Old Skool “Knot”)

Style Codes: VN000Y1CHAY (Royal Cobalt / Multi Blue) and VN000Y1CHAD (Soft Sage / Mushroom Brown)

Vans continues its creative resurgence in 2026 with the OTW (Off The Wall) Old Skool 36 “Knot” pack, a fresh nautical-inspired take on the brand’s iconic skate shoe. This release blends classic Vans DNA with premium materials, innovative detailing, and enhanced comfort technology, making it one of the most distinctive Old Skool variants in recent years.

The “Knot” edition draws clear inspiration from maritime and boat shoe aesthetics. Instead of traditional laces, the design incorporates thick, nautical-style rope elements tied into prominent knots. These ropes run strategically across the toe box, through the signature side stripe (often called the “jazz stripe”), and onto the heel tab. This creates a handcrafted, functional-yet-decorative look that evokes sailing knots while maintaining the shoe’s skate-ready low-top silhouette.

The pack includes two distinct colorways:

  • Royal Cobalt / Multi Blue (VN000Y1CHAY): Features vibrant royal blue suede overlays on the toe, lace area, and heel. The side panels and tongue use a lighter multi-blue knit fabric, giving it an oceanic, energetic vibe perfect for summer.
  • Soft Sage / Mushroom Brown (VN000Y1CHAD): A more earthy, naturalistic option with pale green suede accents paired against mushroom brown knit sections. This version leans into a softer, nature-inspired palette.

Both pairs elevate the standard Old Skool construction with heavyweight 20 oz canvas and suede uppers for superior durability. The rope knots add texture and visual interest without compromising wearability. A soft padded collar enhances comfort around the ankle, while the higher sidewall with a gloss finish provides a refined structural look.

This isn’t just a cosmetic update. The OTW Old Skool 36 “Knot” incorporates several premium upgrades:

  • Upper Construction: Heavyweight canvas combined with suede panels for toughness and premium feel. Tight-knit fabric on the sides and tongue adds breathability and a modern texture contrast.
  • Lacing and Detailing: Thick fuzzy laces paired with nylon rope knots across key areas (toe box, stripe, heel) for a unique, secure fit and standout appearance.
  • Insole and Cushioning: OTW by Vans leather footbed paired with Sola Foam ADC (All-Day Comfort) insole. This uses at least 30% biobased PU foam (partially plant-derived and USDA Certified Biobased) for soft, durable cushioning that holds up during long wear.
  • Outsole: Custom Vibram vulcanized outsole with tank tread pattern. This delivers excellent all-terrain grip on both wet and dry surfaces — a significant upgrade over standard Vans waffle soles, making these suitable for skateboarding, casual walking, or light outdoor use.

The vulcanized build preserves that classic Old Skool look and flex while the reinforced foxing tape (inspired by 90s Osnaburg outsoles) adds heritage authenticity and longevity.

lineup

The OTW program represents Vans’ push toward more experimental, elevated designs. In 2026, we’ve seen the brand experiment with pearlized finishes, high-profile collabs (like Satoshi Nakamoto), and archive-inspired packs. The “Knot” fits perfectly into this wave — taking the beloved 1977-born Old Skool silhouette (Vans’ first shoe to feature the side stripe) and giving it a fresh, thematic twist.

Skate culture roots remain strong, but these shoes easily transition into streetwear, casual, or even smart-casual outfits. Pair the blue version with jeans and a button-down for a nautical preppy look, or style the sage pair with cargos and a hoodie for an earthy, everyday vibe.

Set for May 21, 2026, the shoes will be available through Vans.com, select retailers like Sneaker Politics, and other global stockists. They come in unisex sizing. Early retailer sightings suggest strong demand, with resale prices already trending above retail in some previews.

Vans has positioned these as premium offerings within the OTW lineup, balancing accessibility with exclusivity through thoughtful details.

why

In a sneaker market saturated with hype drops and minimalist designs, the Old Skool 36 “Knot” stands out by successfully merging function and storytelling. The nautical rope motif isn’t gimmicky — it enhances durability and grip while paying homage to Vans’ Southern California surf and skate heritage (the brand started making deck shoes before dominating skate parks).

For longtime Vans fans, this represents evolution without abandoning roots. The upgraded Vibram outsole and biobased cushioning address common complaints about comfort in classic vulcanized shoes. Collectors will appreciate the limited thematic pack approach, while everyday wearers get a durable, stylish daily beater.
