American Horror Story Opens the Vault for a Thirteen-Episode Reunion of Its Own Ghosts

Three half-hour episodes land September 24 on FX and Hulu, with Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters back in roles from earlier seasons.

The first three episodes of American Horror Story: 13 air back to back on Thursday, September 24, beginning at 9 p.m. ET on FX and Hulu, each one slotted into a half-hour window. The thirteenth installment of the anthology from Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk comes more than two years after Delicate aired its last episode in April 2024, and it is built as a reunion: Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters are all back, playing characters they first brought to life in earlier seasons.

Behind the camera, Charlie Carver and Ned Martel are credited with writing episodes two through six, while Murphy wrote the premiere with Falchuk and directed it himself. According to FX’s episode listings as reproduced by The Futon Critic, Crystle Roberson Dorsey directed three of the first six episodes, with Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and Jesse Peretz taking one each. Murphy is the season’s showrunner, per Wikipedia, a role Halley Feiffer held on Delicate, and Deadline’s trailer report lists Murphy, Falchuk, Martel, Carver, Eric Kovtun, Nissa Diederich, Scott Robertson, Tanase Popa, Dorsey, Jennifer Salt and Tim Minear as executive producers.

The season carries its own episode count as a title, and the rel pattern is as unusual as the number. Three episodes air on September 24 and again on October 1, then two apiece on October 8, 15 and 22, and a single closing episode arrives October 29, two days before Halloween. Delicate, by contrast, spread its nine episodes across two parts, five in fall 2023 and four in spring 2024. Only three earlier seasons, Asylum, Coven and Freak Show, also ran thirteen episodes, according to the episode tables on Wikipedia’s series page, whose infobox lists the show’s running times at 32 to 73 minutes per episode. Each of this season’s installments gets a half-hour slot: on premiere night, FX’s listings place the three episodes at 9:00, 9:30 and 10:00 p.m. ET, and the October 1 trio repeats that pattern.

The date itself moved. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the season was first indicated for a debut around Halloween 2026 before FX fixed the earlier September date. Episodes stream on Hulu, and Wikipedia’s page for the season adds that international audiences will get it on Disney+.

The cast list reads as a roll call of the franchise. Lange is playing all four of her earlier characters, per Variety’s trailer report, which by the show’s own history means Constance Langdon in Murder House, Sister Jude in Asylum, Fiona Goode in Coven and Elsa Mars in Freak Show. Disney+ notes that her return follows an eight-year absence, since she last appeared in 2018’s Apocalypse. Paulson is playing six roles by Variety’s count, Cordelia Goode among them, though Murphy has said six or seven, and Peters is playing five, including Tate Langdon, Kai Anderson and James Patrick March, as Disney+ lists them.

The Coven roster is the deepest. Angela Bassett plays Marie Laveau, Emma Roberts is Madison Montgomery, Gabourey Sidibe is Queenie and Frances Conroy is Myrtle Snow, alongside Paulson’s Cordelia. Leslie Grossman is listed as Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt from Apocalypse, John Carroll Lynch is back as Twisty the Clown from Freak Show (TV Guide floats other Lynch roles, including Mr. Jingles from 1984, though none beyond Twisty is confirmed), Mat Fraser reprises Paul the Illustrated Seal and Jamie Brewer returns as Addie Langdon. Kathy Bates and Billie Lourd are in the cast too. As of TV Guide’s September 10 roundup, nine of the franchise’s eleven most frequent performers by episode count had signed on, missing only Lily Rabe and Denis O’Hare, and Peters himself calls it a “greatest-hits season,” in TV Guide’s telling.

Newcomers include John Waters and Paul Anthony Kelly, both making their series debuts, and Joey Pollari, who plays Ben DeSoto, a new hospice worker trained by Constance herself. Disney+ presents Ben as the season’s protagonist and the way in for anyone who has not watched the previous 132 episodes. It also notes that Kelly arrives after his breakout role in FX’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, while Peters comes fresh from FX’s body-horror series The Beauty. Wikipedia’s cast table also lists Alex Consani, Madelaine Petsch, Cara Delevingne, Tig Notaro and Zach Villa, with Villa named as Richard Ramirez, the role he played in 1984.

FX’s official logline promises an installment that does justice to the number most people fear, and credits the franchise with more than 700 million streaming hours. Disney+’s companion feature adds that a present-day crisis pulls in characters from earlier chapters while the number 13 keeps surfacing with increasingly sinister consequences. Ben is the entry point. The premiere, titled “13,” has him providing hospice care to a mysterious client in an eerie penthouse after a near-death experience, and “1:13 AM” sends him into some unusual hospice duties while explaining how the job came open. In “Rauhnacht,” Constance hosts a holiday party and has to deal carefully with two surprise guests, and “Is That All There Is?” follows those guests to darker places as her evening winds down.

“Date Night” brings a friend of Ben’s girlfriend looking to reconnect, whether he is ready to face the past or not, while “The Return of Devil’s Night” has the witches of Miss Robichaux’s Academy turning to forgotten magic as an unseen threat closes in, per FX’s listings. Descriptions for episodes seven through thirteen had not been published at the time of writing.

How much of the season belongs to Coven has been a running question. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, in an interview relayed by The Hollywood Reporter, he pushed back on the assumption that the season is a Coven sequel, saying, “It’s all the seasons,” and likened the ensemble to the Avengers assembling against a shared enemy. Set photos of the Coven witches reassembled during filming in New York had circulated earlier in the summer, and episode six is built around Miss Robichaux’s Academy, the witches’ school. Wikipedia’s account adds that the season was first teased as a Coven sequel in the vein of Apocalypse, before the focus was clarified as the number 13 itself and the bad-luck superstition attached to it, and that the subtitle, 13, was announced in July.

American Horror Story premiered on FX on October 5, 2011, and its pilot drew 3.2 million viewers, the best debut the network had recorded for a series up to that point, while the first season went on to become the most-viewed new cable series of 2011. Murphy and Falchuk began work on it before Glee went into production, and Murphy has said that after moving from Nip/Tuck to Glee, something challenging and dark felt like the natural next step; FX ordered a pilot in February 2011 and picked up the series that July. The pitch was the anthology: every season a self-contained miniseries with its own characters and setting, all sharing one fictional universe that the writers can open up for crossovers. Lange, who won two Emmys, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her work on the show, appeared in the first four seasons and returned as Constance for Apocalypse, the installment that merged the Murder House and Coven storylines. James Cromwell and Bates also won Emmys, and Lady Gaga won a Golden Globe.

Critics have split on individual seasons: Wikipedia’s table of Rotten Tomatoes scores puts 1984 highest at 88 percent and Hotel lowest at 64, with Coven at 85 and Asylum at 84. Audience numbers on original broadcast have moved a long way as well. Freak Show’s October 2014 premiere drew 6.13 million viewers, the series high, while Delicate’s September 2023 premiere drew 0.45 million, per Wikipedia’s viewership table. Delicate was a departure in its own right: the first season adapted from a novel, Danielle Valentine’s Delicate Condition, with Roberts as a film star pursuing pregnancy through IVF. Before this season the tally stood at twelve seasons and 132 episodes, plus a spin-off, American Horror Stories, that ran three seasons on FX on Hulu beginning in July 2021. The studio credit changed underneath the franchise as well: the show was made by 20th Century Fox Television from 2011 to 2020, and the unit is now credited as 20th Television, the name in this season’s credits.

TV Guide dates the official announcement of the season to October 2025, when Paulson, Peters, Roberts, Lourd, Bates, Bassett, Grossman, Lange and Sidibe were reported as returning alongside Ariana Grande, according to a Variety report of October 31 as cited on Wikipedia. Filming began April 6, 2026, and first-look photos of Paulson and Lange followed on April 9. The cast kept growing: Waters in February, Pollari in April, Consani, Kelly and Petsch in May, Lynch, Fraser and Mena Suvari later that month, and further names in July and August.

Grande’s exit came in July. TV Guide, citing Deadline, reports that she stepped away because of conflicts with rescheduled dates on her Eternal Sunshine Tour, and that she had not yet filmed any scenes. Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter that he could barely finish asking his legacy stars either they would come back before hearing yes, Lange included, who had not been a series regular since Freak Show. He also said he thinks he had not directed an episode of the show since Freak Show, and he directed this premiere. Filming wrapped in late July.

The same interview, published in early August, addressed what comes next. “Season 13 is not the end,” Murphy said, adding that he is already working on a fourteenth season, and that FX chairman John Landgraf has told him the network will keep airing the show as long as he wants to make it.

The September 24 date was announced July 9, alongside a San Diego Comic-Con activation that Variety described as four ice cream trucks serving flavors themed on past seasons, plus a Saturday-evening event at a secret location built around a thirteenth scoop that might hint at the new installment. FX rel a first teaser on August 13, which opens on Twisty the Clown, moves through a hotel that nods to Hotel and shows Peters as Kai Anderson, Lange as Constance Langdon, Paulson as Cordelia, Bassett as Marie Laveau and Roberts as Madison Montgomery, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s teaser report, whose headline also lists the Rubber Man among the returns.

The full trailer followed on September 10, opening on the line “Welcome to the greatest show on earth,” according to Deadline, and running about two minutes by TV Guide’s count, with Peters appearing in several different parts. FX’s own site lists the official teaser at one minute and seven seconds and also carries an official companion podcast, AHS: 13 Official Podcast. The thirteenth and last episode of the season is scheduled for October 29, a single half-hour slot two days before Halloween.
