Arsenal and adidas Trade the Pitch for the Terraces With a New Handball Spezial

A navy suede Handball Spezial built around Arsenal’s tinctures landed in Japan on July 24, pulling the club’s football heritage back onto a shoe born for a different sport entirely.

The adidas Originals Handball Spezial was never built with football in mind. It came out of 1979 as an indoor training shoe for European handball players, a low cut suede sil meant for quick lateral cuts on a gym floor, not for standing on a cold terrace in North London. That gap between origin and afterlife is most of what makes this release interesting. This latest colorway, done in partnership with Arsenal FC, leans directly into that afterlife, using club colors and details rather than any nod to the shoe’s actual sporting past.

The shoe went on sale in Japan on July 24, 2026, through adidas’ own online store, priced at 15,950 yen. It carries the style code KK3021 and the internal colorway name Preloved Ink, Hazy Yellow, Collegiate Navy, which reads more like a mood board than a paint chart, and that is more or less the point.

The upper runs almost entirely in a deep navy suede, extended into a tonal tongue, laces, and collar so the shoe reads as one unbroken block of color from the front. Against that, the three stripes down each side run in a lighter hazy yellow, paired with a gold toned SPEZIAL wordmark along the lateral panel, a small detail that keeps the shoe from tipping fully into replica kit territory. A red adidas label sits on the tongue, and the heel carries a yellow detail meant to echo the club’s cannon emblem, Arsenal’s long standing nickname source and one of English football’s more recognizable crests. The insole picks up a trefoil pattern, tying the shoe back to adidas Originals rather than adidas Football. Underneath, the construction keeps the classic T-toe and gum rubber sole that has defined the Handball Spezial across every version since its reissue years, so nothing about the base shoe has actually changed, only what sits on top of it.

Arsenal’s own history gives this pairing more weight than a standard club merchandise rel usually carries. The club was formed in 1886 by workers at the Royal Arsenal armament factory in Woolwich, in southeast London, which is where both the cannon emblem and the Gunners nickname actually come from, not from anything to do with football tactics or style of play. That industrial, working class origin is also part of why the Handball Spezial makes sense as a vehicle for Arsenal nostalgia in the first place. The shoe’s own second life came through British football terrace culture in the 1980s and 90s, where fans wore Spezials, Sambas, and Gazelles as a kind of uniform independent of whatever kit their club was selling that season, often color matched to their team without any official license involved. This release essentially closes that loop, turning an unofficial terrace habit into an officially licensed product decades later.

adidas and Arsenal have their own separate, more direct history to draw on here too. The brand supplied Arsenal’s kits from the late 1980s through the mid 1990s, then stepped away for a quarter century before returning as the club’s kit supplier again for the 2019 to 2020 season. That partnership has since been extended through 2030, which gives both sides a long runway to keep producing lifestyle products like this one rather than treating it as a one off marketing moment.

This is not the first time the two names have shown up together on a Handball Spezial. adidas and Arsenal previously worked with the label Maharishi on a black and carbon colorway of the same shoe, released in 2023, which suggests this is becoming something closer to a recurring line than an isolated collaboration. What has changed this time is the absence of a third design partner. Where the earlier release routed the Arsenal identity through Maharishi’s own design lang, this one keeps the lab to just the club and the brand, letting the crest, the cannon detail, and the color story carry the whole design without an outside collaborator’s fingerprints on top.

That simplicity fits into a broader pattern for the Handball Spezial generally, which has spent the last several years absorbing country and club identities almost as readily as it absorbs new colorways, including a recent run of national federation editions released around this year’s World Cup buildup. Arsenal’s version sits inside that same strategy, using a shoe that already carries decades of unofficial football terrace history and finally making that connection explicit.
