“I Am Legend 2,” the anticipated sequel to the 2007 post-apocalyptic thriller starring Will Smith, is currently in development. While an official release date has not been confirmed, projections suggest a potential premiere in 2025.

Development Timeline and Current Status

The sequel was officially announced in March 2022, with Will Smith set to reprise his role as Dr. Robert Neville and Michael B. Jordan joining the cast in an undisclosed role. Both actors are also attached as producers.

In February 2023, writer Akiva Goldsman, who penned the original film, confirmed that the project was progressing, with Warner Bros. entering a multi-year first-look deal with his production company, Weed Road. Goldsman indicated that the sequel would draw inspiration from the alternate ending of the original film and cited the post-apocalyptic series “The Last of Us” as an influence.

By December 2023, Will Smith revealed that a new script draft had been completed and that discussions with Michael B. Jordan were ongoing. He stated, “I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. We’re really close; the script just came in.”

In June 2024, Michael B. Jordan provided an update, mentioning that they were still refining the script and expressing enthusiasm about collaborating with Smith. He noted, “We’re still working on the script and getting that up to par… I’m really excited to get in front of the camera with him.”

Projected Release Timeline

Given the current stage of development and the time required for pre-production, filming, and post-production, a 2025 release appears plausible. However, this timeline is speculative and subject to change based on various factors, including production schedules and potential industry disruptions.

Plot and Canonical Direction

The sequel is expected to diverge from the theatrical ending of the original film, instead building upon the alternate ending where Dr. Neville survives. This approach allows for continuity in Smith’s character arc and opens new narrative possibilities. Goldsman mentioned that the sequel would explore a world several decades post-apocalypse, with nature reclaiming urban spaces, drawing inspiration from “The Last of Us.”

While “I Am Legend 2” does not yet have a confirmed release date, developments indicate that the project is actively moving forward, with key talent committed and script refinements underway. Fans of the original film can anticipate further updates as the sequel progresses toward production and eventual release.
