Anniversary items land with a 3 September event at 81 BELOW. Flagship at Jingumae 4-26-14. Four-brand collide, names still thin on the official card.

GUESS JEANS Japan put the birthday on the grid in late August. One year since the flagship opened. Limited collaboration items. On the sale date, Thursday 3 September 2026, a night anyone can walk into. 17:00 to 20:00. 81 BELOW, basement of GUESS JEANS Tokyo, 4-26-14 Jingumae, Protect Building. Photo booth. Drinks. Two DJs. A UFO catcher stocked with the limited thing.

The brief attached to that week is a collide with four brands, a package meant to carry the charm of the store and of denim culture on this stretch of Tokyo. The official anniversary card did not print those four names. It printed the party. Until hangtags and stills exist, the four stay a count, not a roster. Inventing logos would be a different article.

What exists without invention is a year. A four-floor shop on the old BOOKMARC lot. A basement that learned to be a gallery and then a club. A calendar of other people’s graphics. A Thursday that locks sale and spectacle on the same date.

4 July 2025. Asia’s first GUESS JEANS flagship. Jingumae 4-26-14. Hours 11:00 to 20:00. Near Omotesando Hills, near the back cut toward Cat Street, in the block that still remembers a bookstore with a famous last name. Hiroshi Fujiwara of Fragment Design took the building. The line at the time was Japanese craft against Californian craft. Stone and wood and denim in a room that had to feel like a house, not a corner of a mall.

Nicolai Marciano drove the landing. Chief New Business Development Officer. GUESS JEANS as a denim-first lifestyle chapter relaunched in 2024, then planted in Tokyo in 2025 while the parent name marked forty years of triangles and washes. The store was the argument that the chapter could live here without looking rented.

Opening week refused to be only a ribbon. THE NEXT 40 YEARS OF DENIM sat in the Yodobashi J6 building from 4 to 12 July, stone wash to AIRWASH, a traveling show that had already done Florence and Amsterdam. VERDY curated GUESS JEANS GIFT SHOP with FRIENDS in the basement through 31 July: fourteen Tokyo names asked to answer a denim brief. AFB, blackmeans, BoTT, Car Service, COMET MAGAZINE, THE FLWRS, HORO, MASU, Reels, SECRETBASE, SEE YOU YESTERDAY, SPECIAL GUEST K.K., TTTMSW, Whimsy. That list belongs to year zero, the opening collide. It is not the four of year one. Keep the piles apart.

November 2025 turned the basement into 81 BELOW, an art room with a name that sounds like a door policy. The number is the building joke and the after-hours joke. Every later party in that room, including this anniversary, uses the same stairs.

The twelve months between opening and birthday filled the way a new flagship fills when it is trying to become a venue. April 2026: Hysteric Glamour through a California and Tokyo lens, launch in the basement, product upstairs and online from 4 April. Mid-April: Artist Series, first chapter with photographer udai, tees at 8,690 yen, hoodies at 16,390, photography as the print. August: keshi for Summer Sonic week, tee and bandana and cap, laser art on purchased denim, signed objects downstairs, a popup that also jumped to Osaka pizza. Earlier autumn 2025: Allen Iverson tees from an old Sports Illustrated sitting. The store learned that a denim floor in Jingumae is expected to host.

Year one is that education. The anniversary is the exam.

3 September is a weekday evening. The caption says anyone can come. That matters on this street, where plenty of brand nights still hide behind a list. Five to eight. Four contents printed in order: anniversary photo booth, drinks, DJ, UFO catcher with limited product as the prize.

The claw machine is the sentence that cannot be dressed up. A year of denim culture reduced to a toy that still requires luck. You stand over glass. You miss. You win a collide piece or you do not. The booth makes a picture. The drink makes a linger. The DJs (srp4s, Tomohiro Kogure) make a Tokyo sound in a California shop. The machine makes the merchandise honest.

Locking the sale to the same date as the party is merchandising as crowd control. You come for the night and leave with the hangtag, or you come for the hangtag and stay for the night. 81 BELOW already knew how to hold a launch and a popup. It had not yet held a birthday that advertised itself as open.

Limited items without published SKUs are a rumor with a time stamp. The brief says four brands and a collide that should feel like the flagship. Collide, in this usage, is the Japan-English for a multi-house drop. Four partners sharing a birthday rack. Until GUESS JEANS prints the quartet, describing washes and pockets would be fiction. The architecture of the night is not fiction. Booth. Drink. Two local decks. A claw.

oh

GUESS spent decades selling a triangle and a Marilyn zip to the world. GUESS JEANS, in Marciano’s telling, is the denim line asked to stand in Harajuku as culture rather than as a license. The Tokyo flagship is where that request becomes rent, staff, and a basement schedule.

Omotesando and Jingumae already speak collide. Cat Street. The Hills. Fragment’s name on a door. A former bookstore footprint. Kids who treat a flagship as a photo set. The charm the brief wants is that geography plus indigo. A shop that can point at the street and at forty years of wash technology in the same tour. Limited cloth is how the tour becomes something you can wear home.

The method of year one was always other people’s hands. Fourteen friends at birth. One Harajuku house in spring. One photographer. One touring musician. A basketball ghost. The first anniversary compresses the method. Four instead of fourteen. A year instead of an opening circus. The risk is that four unnamed partners become a teaser that outlives the drop. The chance is that the stills, when they land, make the basement night look like a reason rather than a raffle.

Denim culture on this block is not a museum. It is a pair you sit in on the stairs outside, a laser custom from the keshi week still on a thigh, a Hysteric graphic that already looks like it has been through a washer. The anniversary collide has to survive that test. If it only survives the claw machine, it is a party favor. If it survives the street the next morning, the year worked.

3 September. Protect Building. Down the stairs. Booth, drink, two DJs, a machine. One year after 4 July 2025. The triangle is still on the door. The four names, when they appear, will have to live on the same street that already ate fourteen friends and a summer of popups. Until then the birthday is a basement and a date. That is already a store learning how to stay.
