Jalen Brunson will host Saturday Night Live’s September 26 season premiere, the first active NBA player to do the job since LeBron James in 2007.

Saturday Night Live confirmed the booking on September 9 with a tweet that read “FIRST FOUR OF SEASON 52!!!” attached to a black and white portrait of its new host. Bury in the announce was the New York Knicks captain, fresh off the most decorated stretch of his career, set to headline the show’s 52nd season premiere on September 26.

Brunson hosts alongside musical guest KATSEYE, the six member pop group closing out a breakout year of its own. Both are making their first appear on the show that night, pairing a Knicks legend barely four months removed from hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy with a group not yet two years removed from a reality competition. The premiere airs live at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC before stream the next day on Peacock, the same format the show has used since Lorne Michaels created it in 1975.

For Brunson, the book extend a run of public appear that started the moment the confetti settled in San Antonio in June and has not really paused since. For a show with that kind of history, it is also a fairly unusual move: putting a professional athlete in the host’s chair while he is still, very much, employed as one.

The booking places Brunson in genuinely rare company. He becomes only the fifth NBA player to host Saturday Night Live in the show’s history, joining a list that includes Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and LeBron James, whose 2007 turn behind the Studio 8H podium remains the standard against which Brunson’s own booking is being measure. More than 35 professional athletes have host the show over the decades, Rolling Out noted in its writeup, among them Derek Jeter, Peyton Manning and Travis Kelce, but the specifically NBA-shaped version of that list has stay remarkable short.

Brunson also becomes the first active athlete of any sport to host since Travis Kelce did it in March 2023, and he joins a specific lineage of New York champions who parlay a title into a turn on the show: Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter hosted in December 2001, and Giants quarterback Eli Manning did the same in May 2012, both moves detailed in Yahoo Sports‘ rundown of the booking. James himself, reflecting on his own hosting turn during the show’s 50th anniversary celebrations earlier this year, said being part of the Saturday Night Live legacy was “a dream come true,” adding that he was only 21 or 22 at the time and would happily do it again.

Brunson’s path to Studio 8H runs through New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he was born in 1996 to Rick and Sandra Brunson, and through Lincolnshire, Illinois, where his family later settle and where he led Stevenson High School to an IHSA state champion and back to back Mr. Basketball honors. His father, Rick, spent nine seasons in the NBA, and the son’s own route to stardom was considerably less direct than the father’s.

At Villanova, Brunson was a role player on the Wildcats’ 2016 national championship team before growing into the engine of a second title run in 2018, a junior season in which he averaged 18.9 points and 4.6 assists on a shooting line of .521 from the field, .408 from three and .802 from the line. That performance earned him the Wooden Award, the Naismith Award and Big East Player of the Year, and it still was not enough to keep him out of the second round of the 2018 NBA draft, where the Dallas Mavericks took him 33rd overall after every team in the league passed on him at least once.

Brunson spent four seasons in Dallas before signing with the Knicks as a free agent in 2022, a move that drew real skepticism given the size of the contract attached to it, a point IBTimes UK raised in connecting the SNL booking to how far his reputation has traveled since. Four seasons later, the questions about whether New York overpaid for a 6 foot 2 guard from the second round have been answered about as definitively as questions like that get answered.

New York’s front office leaned into the Villanova connection rather than away from it. Josh Hart arrived by trade in the 2022 to 2023 season, and the roster briefly carried a fourth Wildcat, Donte DiVincenzo, before he moved on to Minnesota in the 2024 trade that brought Karl-Anthony Towns to New York. Forward Mikal Bridges, part of that same 2016 championship team, joined a few months later in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets, prompting the Villanova program’s own social media account to celebrate what fans had already started calling the Nova Knicks. All four players spent their college careers under coach Jay Wright, and Brunson has continued the bit off the court as well, co-hosting the Roommates Show podcast with Hart between games.

None of this happens without June. Brunson closed out the San Antonio Spurs in five games to deliver the Knicks their first championship since 1973, a 53 year drought that ended on the road with a 94 to 90 win in Game 5. He scored 45 points that night, tying Michael Jordan’s mark for the most points in a road win that clinched an NBA Finals, and averaged 32.6 points across the series on his way to Finals MVP honors, a run NBA.com’s own recap laid out point by point. He had already collected Eastern Conference Finals MVP honors two rounds earlier, and across 19 playoff games that postseason he averaged 28.4 points, 6.1 assists and 3.2 rebounds.

The regular season track record backs that up. Across 561 games with the Mavericks and Knicks, Brunson has averaged 19.2 points, 5.3 assists and 3.2 rebounds, a body of work that has produced three All-Star selections and three All-NBA Second Team nods in the 2024, 2025 and 2026 seasons alone, on top of being named the league’s Clutch Player of the Year in 2025.

The summer that followed the championship has been just as busy as the spring that preceded it. Brunson attended his own fourth annual charity golf classic at Westchester Country Club in August, picked up hardware at the 2026 ESPYs, accepted an invitation from WWE’s Roman Reigns to appear at Saturday Night’s Main Event at Madison Square Garden, and kept recording Roommates Show with Hart between appearances. He even weighed in on a viral moment involving Taylor Swift’s fans and an ESPN New York analyst who had joked about Swift’s Knicks loyalty on air, telling reporters after the championship win to “cut her some slack,” a brief defense that made its own headlines given how closely his own celebrity has started tracking alongside the team’s.

Asked what came next after the parade itself, Brunson gave an answer that went viral for its own reasons, telling reporters he wanted to “try to get on, try to go to ‘SVU,'” a ref to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit that resonated with fans given actress Mariska Hargitay’s frequent presence courtside at Madison Square Garden throughout the playoffs.

Add a wrist surgery in July, an NBA Finals rematch still to come, and now a hosting gig at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and it is fair to say Brunson’s 2026 has not included much of an offseason at all.

KATSEYE arrives at Studio 8H on a comparable run. The Los Angeles based group, six members drawn from the Philippines, South Korea, Switzerland and the United States, formed through the 2023 reality competition Dream Academy, a joint project between Hybe and Geffen Records that was later chronicled in its own Netflix docuseries. The group debuted in June 2024 and has spent the two years since building toward exactly this kind of moment: two Grammy nominations for “Gabriela,” a run of singles that includes “Touch,” “Gnarly” and “Gabriela,” a Billboard 200 top five debut for their second EP, Beautiful Chaos, and recognition as TikTok’s Global Artist of the Year. Their third EP, WILD, arrived August 14 and is currently backing a sold out WILDWORLD arena tour that had the group in London’s O2 Arena just days before the SNL announce.

Pairing KATSEYE with Brunson gives the premiere two guests making their first appearance on the show in the same episode, a detail NBC’s own announcement highlighted when it revealed the pairing alongside the season’s next three bookings.

NBC did not stop at one announcement. Along with Brunson and KATSEYE, the network confirmed three more episodes at once, giving fans a full month of Season 52 before a single sketch has aired. Dakota Johnson returns for her third hosting turn on October 3, timed to the October 2 release of her film Verity, with hardcore band Turnstile making its own SNL debut as musical guest. Shane Gillis follows on October 10 for his third time hosting, joined by Rosalía for her second appearance, fresh off the final stretch of her Lux world tour. After a two week break, the show returns October 31 with Inde Navarrette, the breakout star of this year’s horror hit Obsession, making her hosting debut on Halloween night alongside musical guest Gracie Abrams, who is returning to the show for the second time.

The new season arrives with some turnover behind the scenes as well. Cast member Chloe Fineman departed after seven seasons, and Martin Herlihy, a writer and on screen member of Please Don’t Destroy, also exited ahead of the premiere. None of that has slowed the show’s momentum, at least by the numbers: Saturday Night Live extend to its own record as the most Emmy nominate program in television history to 360 total nominations at this year’s Creative Arts Emmys, and it competes for Best Variety Series at the Primetime Emmys on September 14, twelve days before Brunson even steps on stage.

The timing is tighter than it might look on a calendar. Brunson underwent surgery on his left wrist in July and is expected to be cleared for basketball activity in time for Knicks training camp, which opens just days before he hosts the premiere. Three weeks after that, on October 20, the defending champions tip off their title defense at home against a rebuilt Philadelphia 76ers roster that now includes LeBron James, who signed with Philadelphia this July after 23 seasons that took him from Cleveland to Miami to Los Angeles.

It sets up a strange kind of symmetry. The last active NBA player to host Saturday Night Live will be on the opposing bench at Madison Square Garden less than a month after the next one steps away from the podium at Studio 8H, both men having taken almost the identical detour through 30 Rockefeller Plaza roughly two decades apart.
