Jhené Put Kendrick Back On Track Fourteen And Called It So Good

Jhené Aiko put Westside Whimsy out through Def Jam and ArtClub. Fourth studio album. Twenty tracks. Six years after Chilombo. Track 14 is So Good featuring Kendrick Lamar. Also on the guest list: Ab-Soul on Love Bomb, Tyga on Like, Whatever, Larry June on Neighbors, OHMA on Golden Coast.

This is the third Aiko–Lamar cut. First was Growing Apart (To Get Closer) on Kendrick’s Overly Dedicated in 2010. Second was Stay Ready (What a Life) on her 2013 EP Sail Out. Then a long gap. So Good is the reunion on her record, not his.

California is the album mood she already named: ’90s records, cars, surf, beach, road trip. The title started as an Erewhon smoothie. The song title is shorter than that. So Good. No workshop metaphor. No club question.

Stay Ready was six minutes of hush and a pitched-down tail. So Good will be measured against that file if anyone wants it to be. Aiko’s lane is still space, not a first-thirty-second assault. Kendrick on her records has usually arrive as a second weather system, not a hook thief. If the new one holds that ratio, the title is the only loud thing.

Westside Whimsy is twenty deep. Features are five. Kendrick is not the opener. He sits after Mine, before Beach Boy. That placement is an album decision: the reunion is a mid-back-half event, not the welcome mat by the door.

Headphones first. Clip second. California car stereo if the mix is built for it. The smoothie title already told you the mood. The verse is the part that has to earn the reunion tax.

Stay Ready is the problem. Growing Apart is the footnote. GNX-era Kendrick is the present tense that did not need this album and still showed up. Chilombo was the last Aiko statement people still stream on rainy nights. Six years is long enough for a reunion to feel like news and short enough for the old file to still win a playlist fight.

Larry June is the other West Coast name in the same week, on Neighbors, after California Dream. Ab-Soul keeps TDE in the building without making the record a TDE record. Tyga is the odd temperature. OHMA closes the coast.

If So Good is only the headline, the album still has nineteen other rooms. If it is the room people stay in, the decade gap was the point.

So Good is a plain phrase. It does not stitch leather. It does not ask why you are alone in the club. It grades the feeling and stops. On an album named for a Westside mood, that flatness is the craft move.
