Jil Sander has stopped asking whether a wallet needs to exist on its own terms, and the answer arrives stuck to the back of a phone.

The piece in question is small enough to disappear in a palm: 6.5 by 9.5 centimeters, half a centimeter thick, built from a single slab of black calf leather sourced and constructed in Italy. There is one card slot, no zipper, no fold, no flap. A magnetic backing does the rest of the work, gripping to any iPhone with MagSafe support and letting the case double as a phone accessory rather than a separate object competing for pocket space. Jil Sander’s official product listing confirms the logo is embossed on both front and back panels, tonal stitching runs along the seams, and the leather is 100 percent calf hide, made in Italy, filed under the house’s small leather goods category for men.

The retail price on the brand’s own site currently lists at $450, positioning it well above the entry tier of card cases from labels like Bottega Veneta or Loewe, though closer to what buyers already pay for Jil Sander’s other leather goods. Reseller and stockist sites under the reference J28VL0002-P6488-001, describing it in near identical lang: slim body, single main slot, magnetic backing purpose built for smartphone attachment.

why

Apple normalized the idea of a leather square stuck to a phone back when it introduced its own MagSafe wallet years ago, and the accessory category has since split into two camps. One chases utility at low price points, foam backed cases from Anker or Spigen sold by the dozen. The other treats the form as an actual leather goods opportunity, something a house with decades of tailor credibility can put its name on without diluting it. Jil Sander’s entry sits firmly in the second camp, priced and finished like the rest of its accessories line rather than discounted as an add on.

The timing tracks with a broader accessories push across the house. Under creative directors Lucie and Luke Meier, Jil Sander has been building out small leather goods, from zip pouches to the Giro card holder, at a pace that suggests the category is no longer an afterthought to ready to wear. A magnetic card holder built specifically around phone attachment reads less like a novelty and more like an acknowledgment that most people now carry a phone before they carry a wallet, and the product should follow the habit rather than fight it.

huh

Jil Sander, the German designer, opened her first store in Hamburg in 1967 and founded her label the following year, building a reputation on restraint: clean lines, muted palettes, tailoring stripped of ornament. The house has operated out of Milan since its early growth years, and under the Meiers, who took creative direction in 2017, that founding austerity has picked up small doses of sensuality and craft without abandoning the original discipline.

A single slot card holder with no visible hardware beyond an embossed logo fits that lineage cleanly. There is nothing to unfold, nothing to unzip, nothing that reads as decorative for its own sake. The magnetic backing itself is the only genuinely new mechanical idea in the object, and even that idea disappears once the case is attached to a phone; from the front, it simply looks like a wallet has vanished into the device.

The card holder is listed as a preorder item on Jil Sander’s own site, with product code J28VL0002P6488001, and also appears through stockists worldwide. Complimentary shipping applies to US orders over $300 on the brand’s site, with returns accepted within 14 days in original packaging. Buyers outside preorder timing should expect the piece to filter into wider stockist inventory in the coming weeks, the usual pattern for small leather goods est from the house.
