Same two cords, same rocking sole, new napped upper. KEEN’s UNEEK Loafer WK X in black suede reaches Japan on October 17 at ¥29,700.

For its first two seasons, KEEN‘s UNEEK Loafer WK traded on shine: polished black leather in the late summer of 2025, then a burgundy cordovan with a deep luster that December. The newest pair goes the other way. Listed in Japan as the UNEEK LOAFER WK X “Suede/Black,” it wraps the same braided cords around a brushed black suede upper, so the weave sits against a matte surface instead of a glossy one. The style code is 1033320, and the Japanese release falls on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

Signal. What happened: KEEN has scheduled a black suede version of its corded loafer for Japanese release, the latest material change to a shoe that began life as a single black colorway. Exact object: KEEN UNEEK LOAFER WK X “Suede/Black,” style 1033320, priced at ¥29,700 in Japan and listicle at €189.99 by Starcow Paris for the European market. When and where: October 17, 2026 in Japan through KEEN’s official Japanese online store, following a European retail listing dated October 1. Source: a Japan market release notice, checked against the Paris retailer’s live product page for the same style code. Why it matters: a one-off experiment from August 2025 now runs as a small family, with leather, cordovan, mule and suede versions arriving inside fourteen months.

The Paris listing spells out the build. Black suede covers the upper, the signature braided cord runs from the forefoot back around the collar, and a penny strap crosses the vamp. Underfoot is KEEN.CURVE, the brand’s walking-specific sole with a continuous heel-to-toe curve, paired with an Eco Anti-Odor lining and a high-traction rubber outsole. The Japanese notice describes the same combination more briefly, as a suede upper set on a thick, high-cushion sole unit. When the original pair launched, KEEN specified that sole as a high-rebound foam midsole over a low-profile lug outsole meant to grip without adding bulk, and described its odor treatment as built on natural ingredients rather than heavy metals or synthetic fragrance.

KEEN was founded in Portland, Oregon in 2003 and built its name on the Newport, a sandal with a protective toe bumper. The UNEEK followed in 2014 as a stranger proposition: an open-air shoe made from two cords and a single sole, neither quite sandal nor sneaker. Over the following decade the company kept pulling at it, adding a platform version, the UNEEK 360, a walking-focused UNEEK WK in spring 2025, and a run of designer collaborations.

The loafer arrived at the end of August 2025, released August 28 in the US at $190 and August 29 in Japan at ¥28,600. KEEN pitched the UNEEK Loafer WK as “outdoor formal,” a penny loafer with moccasin cues whose upper was stitched and woven by hand from ethically sourced leather, with 2.5mm leather cords doing the braiding. Each pair was individually numbered, with the serial stamped on the right shoe, and Japanese sizing ran all-gender from 22.5 to 31 cm. The first run sold out in under 48 hours.

That speed shaped what came next. In December 2025, KEEN returned with a burgundy-brown Cordovan version at $200, which WWD covered as a follow-up to the sold-out original. Then, at the end of September 2026, KEEN Japan’s own announcement introduced the UNEEK Mule WK for an October 2 rel. The mule keeps the loafer’s handcrafted leather upper, corded detailing and KEEN.CURVE sole but opens up the heel for an easy-on shape, in black only at ¥28,600.

At ¥29,700, the suede pair costs ¥1,100 more in Japan than both the original leather loafer and the new mule. In the US, the Cordovan pair had already nudged the line’s price from $190 to $200 last winter. The name shifts slightly as well. The Japanese listing appends an X, calling the shoe UNEEK LOAFER WK X, while the Paris retailer sells the same style code simply as the Uneek Loafer WK Black. No public explanation of the suffix could be found.

A few details remain open. Neither listing says whether the serial numbering, which defined the first run, carries over to the suede version. No US release date or dollar price had surfaced as of writing, and the Paris product page, dated for an October 1 drop, already shows the pair as sold out. In Japan, KEEN’s official online store is the confirmed channel.

The sneaker-loafer is now a crowded category. New Balance helped set the pattern with the 1906L, HOKA went chunky with the Speed Loafer, and adidas turned its 1979 Handball Spezial into a laceless slip-on this year. Most of those designs begin with a running shoe or a court shoe and add a saddle or a strap. KEEN began with a sandal, which is why its loafer still shows open cord work across the toe and wraps the collar in braid rather than piping.

Suede moves that hybrid a step further from the trail. A matte upper sits closer to a city moccasin than the polished leather did, while the KEEN.CURVE sole stays the same walking unit the brand already puts under its UNEEK WK shoe. In Japan, the suede pair lands fifteen days after the mule, on October 17.
