KLexus Unveils ‘Liminal Cycles’: A Multisensory Art Installation Inspired by the LF-ZC Luxury EV

Lexus has unveiled “Liminal Cycles,” an innovative multisensory installation inspired by its LF-ZC luxury electric vehicle (EV). Developed in collaboration with the Bratislava-based design studio Crafting Plastics, this installation was showcased during Miami Art & Design Week 2024 at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami).

Concept and Design

“Liminal Cycles” explores the evolving concept of Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs), emphasizing software-enabled personalization and adaptability. The central sculpture, directly inspired by the LF-ZC BEV concept car, is crafted from environmentally responsive bioplastic materials. This design invites viewers to engage with innovations in sustainable materials and reactive software, highlighting the potential for customizable in-vehicle experiences.

Interactive Elements

The installation features four interactive, sensory-responsive sculptures:

•Central Sculpture: A to-scale representation of the LF-ZC, coated with a UV-responsive material that changes color based on real-time fluctuations in ultraviolet radiation levels.

•Steering Wheel-Inspired Sculpture: This piece references the LF-ZC’s steering wheel, enticing viewers to interact with its rugged, earthy texture. It responds to human touch with fluctuations in the volume and intensity of a site-specific sound composition.

•Headrest-Inspired Sculpture: Reimagining the form of the LF-ZC’s headrest, this section of lounge seating emits a Lexus-inspired scent in response to visitors’ interaction.

•Wind-Activated Lattice Sculpture: This bioplastic lattice design uses UV-reactive material to detect shifts in UV radiation, responding with a subtle reveal of the Lexus logo across the delicate structure.

Material Innovation

Crafting Plastics utilized their proprietary bioplastic material, Nuatan®, for the central sculpture. Nuatan® is a bio-based material series that is biodegradable, derived from 100% renewable resources, and leaves no microplastics behind. This choice underscores the installation’s commitment to sustainability and responsible design.

Connective Effort

This project marks Lexus’ third year partnering with ICA Miami and the brand’s ninth year participating in Miami Art & Design Week. Through collaborations with studios like Crafting Plastics, Lexus continues to build inspiring experiences that encourage thoughtful dialogue centered on creativity and design.
