DRIFT

In a notable connect, Japanese fashion label NEEDLES has partnered with British shoemaker Clarks Originals to reintroduce the Wallabee Monk, a distinctive belted version of the classic Wallabee shoe.

Originally launched in the 1970s, the Wallabee Monk is a moccasin-inspired design featuring a strap closure, offering an alternative to traditional laced footwear. Despite its unique appeal, this model has remained relatively elusive, with only occasional re-releases over the years.

Design and Features

This collaboration presents the Wallabee Monk in three variations: low-cut, mid-cut, and a high-cut double-strap model. Each iteration is crafted from premium suede and is available in two colorways: classic black and maple beige. A standout feature is the addition of a monk strap adorned with a metallic peace sign buckle, a signature motif of NEEDLES that enhances both the aesthetic and functionality of the shoe.

The brand’s iconic butterfly emblem is subtly embossed on the heel, adding a touch of elegance and brand identity. Further elevating the design, the traditional crepe sole has been replaced with a Vibram Morflex outsole, known for its lightweight properties and superior traction, ensuring modern performance without compromising the shoe’s classic appeal.

Historical Context

The original Wallabee Monk drew inspiration from the “Grasshopper,” a moccasin-style shoe released by Clarks in the 1970s and manufactured in Kilkenny, Ireland. At the time, its unconventional design contrasted sharply with the more formal footwear prevalent in England, leading to mixed receptions domestically. However, the Wallabee found significant success in North America during the 1960s, resonating with the era’s counterculture movements and becoming a symbol of individuality and non-conformity.

Release Information

The NEEDLES x Clarks Originals Wallabee Monk collection was released on April 5, 2025. The pricing ranged from ¥38,500 JPY to ¥46,200 JPY (approximately $264 USD to $316 USD), varying by model. The collection was made available through NEEDLES and Clarks Originals’ online platforms, as well as select retailers.

Impression

This connection between NEEDLES and Clarks Originals successfully marries heritage design with contemporary fashion sensibilities. By reviving and reimagining the Wallabee Monk, the partnership pays homage to the shoe’s rich history while introducing modern elements that appeal to today’s fashion enthusiasts. The meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality ensure that this collection stands out as a noteworthy addition to both brands’ portfolios.
