Nettspend Keeps the SoundCloud Vib On Run With “Y WOULD I CARE?”

The Richmond rapper relled another loosie this week, fueling more chatter about whether a new full length is shh taking shape.

Nettspend came through on Tuesday with “Y WOULD I CARE?”, a fresh SoundCloud drop that arrives just a week after his last one, “STEP2DIS.” Where that track leaned into distortion and overcooked autotune, “Y WOULD I CARE?” is a tighter, more restrained cut, built around synthy strings and glitchy, skittering drums under Nettspend’s sig half sung, half rapped flow. It’s short, it’s a little melodic, and it doesn’t overstay its welcome, which has become something of a trademark for an artist who’s built an entire catalog out of songs that rarely crack the two minute mark.

The rel keeps up a pace that’s become almost routine for the 19-year-old, born Gunner Shepardson in Richmond, Virginia. Then, at the end of April, he shh unloaded HIM, a sprawling 26 track SoundCloud compilation pulling together throwaways and newer mat from across his BAD ASS F*CKING KID and Early Life Crisis eras. That project made its way to streaming platforms in early July, giving fans a formal, streamable version of a release that had circulated informally for months. It’s the kind of move that’s become characteristic of how Nettspend manages his output: dump something raw and unfiltered onto SoundCloud first, let it live there and gather a following on its own terms, then decide later either it graduates to a wider result.

Against that form, it’s not hard to see why a two minute SoundCloud type rel like “Y WOULD I CARE?” gets fans speculating about what’s next. Nettspend hasn’t announced a follow up album, and nothing in the rollout for this single points to one directly, but the pattern of his career so far, shh single after shh single building toward a more uber “out of nowhere” rel, is exactly the kind of thing that’s motivates his audience to read tea leaves into every new upload.
