The Robot Chicken Adult Swim Special hit at midnight 30 August: 25 years of the block, one sinking party, Harvey Birdman in court.
Adult Swim turned 25 on a calendar that started 2 September 2001. Cowboy Bebop, Sealab 2021, Space Ghost Coast to Coast were in that first late block on Cartoon Network. The house style was already a joke about television talking to itself.
Robot Chicken arrived in 2005. Seth Green and Matthew Senreich built half-hours out of toys, licensed faces, and a title they lifted off a Chinese-menu line in West Hollywood. Specials ate Star Wars, DC, The Walking Dead. This one eats the landlord.
The Robot Chicken Adult Swim Special ran Sunday 30 August 2026 at midnight Eastern on the linear block. HBO Max had it 31 August. Half an hour. TV-MA. Directed by John Harvatine. Created by Green and Senreich. Writers on the Max card include Doug Goldstein, Tom Root, Maggie Cannan, Mike Fasolo, Breckin Meyer, Tom Sheppard, and the two showrunners.

Twenty-five years of a programming block is an odd anniversary. It is not a series finale and not a network launch. It is a time slot that became a brand. Adult Swim sold night as a different country from morning cartoons. Robot Chicken has lived inside that country for two decades of the twenty-five.
Green told USA Today For The Win the half-hour conversation was already open. The anniversary date walked in. Adult Swim itself became the target. No better subject, he said.
That is the production reason. The on-screen reason is a ship.
Official copy: every iconic Adult Swim character boards a cruise to mark a quarter century. The cruise fails. Water, panic, a docket. Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law is the hope that whoever wrecked the party sees a judge. Trailer language called it a ship of fools. Joe Pera reads calm over chaos in the promo. Dethklok gets a band-stand line. Lucy from Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil shrugs off Rick and Morty as too important to attend. That last gag is in the trailer, not a leak.
Polygon’s summer note also flagged a later Robot Chicken pass at Cartoon Network’s 35th in 2027, plus a five-part CN/Adult Swim docuseries. Separate stack. This special is the 25.

Gary Cole is Harvey again. That choice does two jobs. Birdman is Adult Swim’s oldest original courtroom joke. He is also a face that can talk to Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Smiling Friends without a translator. Cole’s name sat on the Rotten Tomatoes TV trailer card for a reason.
The cruise is not invented texture. Green said it on the record to For The Win. Adult Swim, in the premise, threw a 25th-anniversary cruise. The characters that have existed on the block are on the boat. Not literally everybody. He named Tim Heidecker, Cole, and Mike Tyson.
A.V. Club ran a clip in which The Venture Bros. and Moral Orel share frame. That is the crossover problem Robot Chicken was built to solve. Different line weights. Different joke speeds. Stop-motion makes them toys in one scale.
Do not expect a plot recap here past the official beats. Cruise. Disaster. Court. Birdman. The rest is the episode.
huh
Adult Swim’s published voice list and the Max page overlap. Green as the Nerd. Senreich in the booth. Cole as Birdman. Carey Means as Frylock. Matt Maiellaro as Err. Dana Snyder and Dave Willis from the Aqua Teen shop. Christopher McCulloch as the Monarch. Doc Hammer as Henchman 21. Tommy Blacha as Toki Wartooth. Brendon Small on the Metalocalypse side.
Newer block faces: Zach Hadel as Charlie Dompler, Michael Cusack as Pim, Cyn in the Smiling Friends lane. Joe Pera as himself. Rachel Ramras as Yung Hee Tyson. Adam Reed as Killface. Chris Elliott as Chris Monsanto. Rob Corddry as Dr. Blake Downs. Emily Pendergast as Frances Applewhite. Katee Sackhoff. Patrick Warburton. Eric André. Eric Wareheim on the Max list next to Heidecker.
That is a roll call, not a guest-star stunt. Most of these people already voiced the same names on the original shows. Robot Chicken’s trick is the set. Foam. Wire. A cruise deck that can flood in twelve frames.
Black Jesus, Assy McGee, Brock Samson, Master Shake’s roommates: summer coverage named them in the boarding party. Rick and Morty stay off the tender, per the Lucy line. Absence as status joke.

For The Win asked how the special started. Green: they had been talking about another half-hour. The anniversary arrived. Adult Swim was the obvious object. He said he was pleased with the shape. The cruise is not a spoiler, he added. The block threw a party. The catalog got on the boat.
That is as much process as this package will lift. IndieWire’s Zilko piece is the other sit-down, dated the morning of the airing. Use that URL. Do not paste their transcript. Circus of the Stars, in that headline, is a comparison: old network specials that herded famous bodies into one arena and hoped the collision was entertainment. Robot Chicken has been doing a meaner version of that collision since 2005. This week the famous bodies were already under one logo.
Senreich’s public role is the same as it has been since the living-room seasons. Co-creator. Producer. Voice. The Max card lists him twice.
Stop-motion still costs time. A cruise ship full of existing puppets is cheaper than a new mythology and more dangerous than a clip show, because the original actors have to agree to stand next to a show they do not work on. The call sheet suggests a lot of them said yes.
fin
Adult Swim in 2001 was a dare after midnight. In 2026 it is a library with a streaming door. The special treats that library as a passenger list. Early surrealism (Aqua Teen, Sealab, Space Ghost’s talk-show ghost). Action pastiche (Venture Bros.). Courtroom cartoon (Birdman). Metal as sitcom (Metalocalypse). Public-access calm (Joe Pera). Current absurdist short-form (Smiling Friends). Prizefighter detective (Mike Tyson Mysteries).
Robot Chicken’s own years sit inside that list. The Nerd is on the boat because the show that is roasting the block also lives on it. That loop is the joke and the business.
Cartoon Network’s 35th is the next announced target. A documentary series about the people who built both brands is also on the summer slate. Neither replaces the midnight half-hour.
30 August, midnight, linear. 31 August, Max. Half an hour of catalog faces on a bad cruise, then a bird in a suit. The block is 25. The toys showed up.
