DRIFT

It’s well known that Paris, the global fashion capital, has a distinct style code: timeless elegance, refinement, and an understated luxury. One notable exclusion from its streets is activewear worn casually outside of the gym—a major fashion faux pas in Parisian culture. This is a sharp contrast to the Australian fashion scene, where activewear has become a staple of everyday attire, blending functionality and comfort seamlessly with a laid-back aesthetic.

In Australia, brands like Lorna Jane and P.E Nation have redefined how activewear is perceived, making it an acceptable, even chic, option for running errands, brunch, and casual social settings. The trend speaks to the country’s embrace of practicality and an outdoorsy lifestyle. While this type of fashion is celebrated in Australia, the rigid boundaries of Parisian style still regard wearing leggings or yoga pants on the streets, outside of fitness settings, as a sartorial misstep.

As the November issue of “Young Rich” highlights, the growing wealth and influence of Australian fashion brands on the global stage contrasts with how these styles are received in places like Paris. The issue also explores how fashion icons from both countries are reshaping their respective industries, but Paris remains steadfast in upholding its standards of formal, structured, and luxurious streetwear. This serves as a reminder that while global fashion is ever-evolving, cultural distinctions remain firmly intact.
