KJ7529. Core Black. Made in Germany. Ostrich-grain leather, oversized trefoil, a strap that skips the lace. Japan 9 October. ¥44,000 at KICKS LAB.

adidas Originals Ultrastar, Made in Germany, Core Black / Core White / Utility Black. Japan retailers have it on a 9 October 2026 window. KICKS LAB opened a lottery on the same code at ¥44,000, entry from 2 October, 11:00 to 5 October, 10:00. Europe had already put the style on sale in the second half of September, around £170. Same shoe, two clocks.

Signal. What happened: the 1988 Ultrastar returns as a German-made black leather pair. Exact product: adidas Originals Ultrastar Made in Germany, KJ7529, Core Black / Core White / Utility Black. When and where: Japan 9 October in the brief, KICKS LAB lottery 2 to 5 October, European shops from mid to late September. Price: ¥44,000 at KICKS LAB, about £170 overseas. Source: KICKS LAB product note and retailer list. Why it matters: a hip-hop shell-toe cousin, rebuilt in the country the company started in, with a strap that lets it skip the lace.

stir

Adi Dassler registered adidas in Herzogenaurach in 1949, after the split with his brother. The three stripes and the trefoil came later. The shoe this pair is copying did not. The Ultrastar landed in 1988, in the same years the shell toe had already left the basketball court and sat in rap videos. It is not a Superstar. The shell is there. The stripe path is there. The last is its own: a lower, dressier basketball shoe that shops in the late eighties treated as the cleaner cousin.

What the 2026 pair keeps from that year is the two ways of wearing it. KICKS LAB’s note puts an elastic strap on the tongue. Laces in, it is a sneaker. Strap across, laces off, it reads as a slip-on. That trick is the Ultrastar’s, not a 2026 invention. Leather lining under it. Rubber outsole. Shell toe for the grip and the outline.

What changed is the material and the marks. The upper is premium leather with an ostrich grain, the small pits that catch light without a print. An oversized trefoil sits on the tongue and again on the heel. On a black shoe those marks are the only high contrast, Core White against Core Black, Utility Black in the smaller hardware. A white pair in the same Made in Germany run already existed. This one is the dark chapter.

why

Made in Germany is a line adidas uses when the pair is built at home rather than in the usual contract plants. Herzogenaurach is still the town. The label is the point of the price. ¥44,000 is not a Superstar ticket. It is a leather, small-run, country-of-origin ticket. KICKS LAB framed the shoe as a hip-hop homage on a classic Originals last. That is accurate as far as 1988. It is also a factory sentence. The ostrich grain and the German make are doing as much work as the shell.

The strap matters more on a black pair than it would on white. Black leather with a shell already looks finished. Pulling the lace out and laying the strap across the tongue changes the opening without changing the color. Two shoes in the box, one upper. That is the Ultrastar argument, and the 2026 pair does not replace it with a new story.

two

European listings put KJ7529 on sale from about 18 to 21 September 2026, colorway Core Black / Core White / Utility Black, near £170 and €170 to €200 depending on the shop. Japan’s public note is later. The brief says 9 October. KICKS LAB’s lottery closes four days before that, which fits a draw-then-rel week rather than a global same-day drop. adidas has not posted a single worldwide clock for this color in the pages checked. Treat 9 October as the Japan window, not as the day the shoe was born.

A white Made in Germany Ultrastar sat in the same series before the black. The black is the one that uses the grain. Ostrich-effect leather goes flat in a photo and shows up in the hand. That is the reason this color exists next to the white one.

KJ7529. Core Black. German make. Strap or lace. 9 October in Japan, ¥44,000 where KICKS LAB is selling the draw.
