Landing in Japan this September, the two-tone VTG Track Jacket is the latest entry in BEAUTY&YOUTH’s yearly run of exclusive adidas Originals archive reworks.

Every September for the past several years, BEAUTY&YOUTH has gone back into the adidas Originals archive and pulled out a track jacket nobody else gets to sell. This year’s version, a Fall/Winter 2026 exclusive called the VTG Track Jacket, is set to arrive in late September priced at ¥14,300, built around a two-tone colorway that the brand describes as chic rather than sporty, despite every technical detail underneath staying true to the sil athletic roots. It is a small, specific rel, the kind of item that will not make headlines outside Japan’s own fashion press, and that is more or less the point: bechu items like this one are built for a customer who already knows exactly what they are looking at.

The jacket keeps the shape recognizable: a moderate raised collar, raglan sleeves, the Three Stripes run down each arm and a trefoil logo sit on the chest, all present and correct. What changes is the color handling. The chest pocket and zip pocket are cut in a contrasting shade from the rest of the jacket, a detail the release copy frame as adding both an accent and a vintage-like mood, and the overall two-tone treatment is what separates this from a standard retail colorway. According to the rel notice, the design draws from an archive model rather than starting from scratch, though the notice itself does not specify which historical adidas Originals track jacket the VTG version is ref. That kind of vagueness is fair typical of these season announce, which tend to describe a garment’s mood and construction in detail while leaving its exact lineage to buyers who already follow the brand close enough to place it themselves.

Full zip construction and a stand up collar put the VTG Track Jacket squarely in the same functional category as any other adidas Originals track top, meant to layer over a T-shirt rather than replace a proper coat once temperatures drop further into autumn. That functional simplicity is part of the appeal for a bechu item like this one: rather than reworking the sil itself into something more elaborate, BEAUTY&YOUTH’s contribution is almost entirely in the colorway and pocket treatment, leaving the jacket wearable in exactly the same contexts as any other adidas Originals track jacket already sitting in a customer’s closet.

flow

The Japanese term for this kind of arrangement is bechu, written 別注, and it describes something more specific than an ordinary retail exclusive. Rather than adidas simply offering a store a slightly different colorway to sell alongside everyone else’s stock, a bechu item is developed as its own product: a specific retailer or select shop chain works directly with the brand to commission a version of an existing sil that will not appear anywhere else, sized, shade and detail to that retailer’s own specification. It is a retail structure that Japanese select shops have used for decades to different themselves from department stores carry the same national brands, and BEAUTY&YOUTH’s parent company has built an entire wing of its business around exact this kind of arrange.

For a shopper outside Japan, the closest rough equivalent might be a designer connection capsule, except without the co-branding that usual comes with one. A bechu item rarely carries any visible marker beyond its colorway and construction to announce that it is exclusive at all; there is no special hangtag calling out the partnership, no separate logo mashup, nothing that visually distinguishes it on a rack from adidas Originals’ regular line beyond the details a careful shopper would already know to look for. The exclusivity lives entirely in the fact that this exact combination of tint  and construction exists at one retailer and nowhere else, not in any outward branding gesture announcing that fact to a casual passerby.

That distinction matters for how the VTG Track Jacket should be read. It is not a colorway adidas Originals is offering more broadly and simply routing through one retailer first. It exists because BEAUTY&YOUTH’s buying team asked for it, worked out the two-tone treatment and the contrast pocket detailing with adidas directly, and will be the only place carrying it once it lands in stores.

This kind of arrangement is not unique to BEAUTY&YOUTH within Japan’s retail landscape; the country’s biggest select shop groups have spent decades running parallel programs with the same handful of international sportswear brands, each chasing a slight different version of the same idea. What separates one chain’s bechu output from another’s is usually a matter of degree and consistency rather than the basic mechanism, and it is on that second measure, consistent, that BEAUTY&YOUTH’s adidas Originals program has quietly built a track record.

Part of why this model works so well in Japan specifically comes down to how the country’s menswear customer tends to relate to archive product in general. A meaningful segment of that customer base treats an original silhouette’s construction details, collar height, pocket placement, logo scale, as information worth knowing on its own terms, indie of whether the finished garment reads as a fashion statement. A bechu jacket that shh gets those details right, without necessarily explain itself loudly, is speaking directly to that customer rather than past them, which is part of why the release copy here spends more space describing pocket construction than it does explain why anyone should want the jacket in the first place.

scope

This is not BEAUTY&YOUTH’s first pass at an adidas Originals track jacket, and it will likely not be its last. UNITED ARROWS, the parent select shop chain BEAUTY&YOUTH operates under, has run a version of this exact exclusive for multiple consecutive years, drawing at various points on adidas Originals’ Beckenbauer Tracksuit lineage specifically: a contour that first appeared in the 1960s and has been continuously revived since, with BEAUTY&YOUTH’s own past exclusives sourcing their design details from 1970s archive references, adapted into a wider, more contemporary form and finished with a muted trefoil logo placed lower on the chest than adidas’ standard placement. Past seasons in the same ongoing series have included a Handball Spezial reworked into a loafer, a Stan Smith bechu colorway, and a Forum 84 Low exclusive that launch in September 2023, alongside more directly track-jacket-focused rel like a grayish blue and off-white Beckenbauer Tracksuit top and a velour version of the same silhouette built specifically for the Japanese market, its fabric swapped for a plusher, more retro-leaning texture while keeping the same relaxed, contemporary fit.

The pattern that emerges across these releases is consist rather than novelty for its own sake. BEAUTY&YOUTH is not chase a different adidas Originals sil every season so much as return again and again, to the same small set of archive shapes, the track jacket chief among them, and finding a new colorway or fabric treatment to justify the repeat visit. The VTG Track Jacket’s two-tone, contrast-pocket treatment is this year’s version of that same exercise, and the fact that it needs so little introduction beyond a colorway description is itself a sign of how established the format has become with BEAUTY&YOUTH’s own customer base.

now

The VTG Track Jacket is not landing in isolation. According to a Japan market release notice, BEAUTY&YOUTH’s adidas Originals exclusives for Fall/Winter 2026 are rolling out across three separate dates through September: a Handball Spezial reworked into loafer form arrived first, follow by the VTG Track Jacket alongside a returning “Tobacco” colorway sneaker exclusive that reportedly performed well in the same window last year, with a Firebird velour tracksuit set, top and pants both, closing out the month. Pricing across the range sits close together, with the loafer and the Tobacco shoe both listed around ¥15,400 and the velour pants coming in lowest at roughly ¥12,100, position the whole capsule as a coordinated autumn rollout rather than a single standalone item.

The Handball Spezial loafer is arguably the more unusual item of the three drops, taking a shoe original built for indoor court sport and finishing it as formal-adjacent footwear, a conversion that has become increasingly common across several shoe brands over the past couple of seasons as the loafer-sneaker hybrid category has grown. The returning Tobacco sneaker colorway, by contrast, is jure it safer: bringing back a specific autumn-appropriate shade that reportedly sold well the previous year is a lower-risk way to fill out a seasonal capsule than commissioning something entirely new, and it suggests BEAUTY&YOUTH’s buying team is willing to lean on proven performers alongside genuinely fresh product within the same rel window.

That the track jacket sits in the middle of the pricing range, alongside a velour tracksuit rather than isolated as the capsule’s headline piece, suggests BEAUTY&YOUTH is treat this season’s adidas Originals exclusives as a rounded seasonal wardrobe update: something to wear over a Tee on a cool September evening, sold next to the loafers and shoes meant to go underneath it, rather than a single collectible object designed to sell out in minutes. Staggering the releases across three separate weeks, rather than dropping the entire capsule at once, also gives each item its own moment in BEAUTY&YOUTH’s own marketing calendar instead of competing with the others for attention on a single launch day.

UNITED ARROWS was founded in Shibuya in 1989, credited in large part to Osamu Shigematsu, who had previously helped launch the American Life Shop Beams, general regarded as the store that started Japan’s select shop retail model in the first place. UNITED ARROWS took that format further, building a business model that blended curated multi-brand retail with a significant share of its own in-house product lines, and BEAUTY&YOUTH has operated as one of those in-house labels for years, positioned around quality, cleanliness and what the brand’s own mat describe as timeless beauty and youthfulness that does not chase trends for their own sake. The company went public in 2002 and has since grown into a group run more than thirty in-house and curated labels across upward of 250 stores, with BEAUTY&YOUTH sit alongside sister brands including green label relaxing, monkey time, DRAWER and H BEAUTY&YOUTH under the same corporate umbrella. Over the decades, UNITED ARROWS’ various labels have built a long connect history stretching well past adidas, into New Balance, The North Face, Dr. Martens, Timberland and HUF, among others.

adidas Originals itself dates to 2001, when adidas formally split its heritage sportswear into its own dedicate line, built around the trefoil logo first used in 1972 and marketed since as a bridge between adidas’ competitive sporting history and street culture more broadly. A bechu partner with a select shop chain like UNITED ARROWS fits squarely inside that positioning: archive-driven product, developed specifically for a retail partner steeped in curate exact this kind of history, sold to a customer who already knows what a Beckenbauer collar is supposed to look like before they ever pick the jacket up off the rack.

None of that context will be visible on the jacket itself once it is hanging on a rail in late September. It will just be a two-tone track jacket, ¥14,300, in a BEAUTY&YOUTH store and nowhere else, doing exactly what a bechu item is supposed to do: familiar enough to need no explanation, specific enough that it could not have come from anywhere but here.
