G-Eazy Clears Customs: “JFK” With Ty Dolla $ign Marks His Indie Vib

Last weekend G-Eazy walked out unannounced at Madison Square Garden. Today the song he performed there is out, on a label he now shares with his host.

The song got its first heard in front of an arena crowd that had no idea it was coming. When Ty Dolla $ign brought his tour to Madison Square Garden last weekend, G-Eazy walked on unannounced and the two ran through a record nobody in the building had heard. That record is “JFK,” produced by Nic Nac and credited to G-Eazy featuring Ty, and it went up on streaming services this morning, Friday, September 25, sitting in the week’s New Music Friday listings alongside a crowded field of releases.

The business side landed a few days before the song did. G-Eazy has entered a joint partnership with Ty’s EZMNY Records and EMPIRE, the Bay Area independent label and distributor, ending a run on RCA Records that began with his 2014 major-label debut These Things Happen and stretched across six albums. “To me, this is bigger than a deal,” he said in the announcement, casting the move as a homecoming built around working with friends.

None of this is a first meeting. The pair toured together on the 2018 Endless Summer Tour, which Substream Magazine caught in Chicago that August, and Ty co-produced and featured on “No More” from G-Eazy’s 2021 album These Things Happen Too. Ty’s own imprint is run with business partner Shawn Barron, and EMPIRE’s leadership pointed to G-Eazy’s long habit of bringing its artists out on the road.

Strictly speaking, “JFK” is not the first music of this chapter. Pretty Girls, a short solo cut, arrived on August 28 carrying a G-Eazy / EMPIRE copyright line, and the partnership announcement lists it as the lead single from a forthcoming album on EZMNY/EMPIRE. What “JFK” adds is the first record under the new arrangement to put Ty’s melodic hooks next to G-Eazy’s verses, the pairing that made the Garden walk-on work. No album title or release date has been announced.

The rollout is running parallel to a tour already underway. G-Eazy’s 23-city The Endless Summer Tour Part II, shared with Logic, opened in Kansas City last week, so “JFK” goes out to fans while he is still playing amphitheaters on the old catalog, including the Tumblr Girls era RCA years he has just left behind.
