Puffed AIR letters is the only relief on the sidewall of the Triple Black Air More Uptempo Low, which carried an October 11, 2025 Japan rel date.

Black from upper to outsole, with oversized AIR lettering the only thing left to read. The Nike Air More Uptempo Low in “Triple Black” (IM6649-001) takes a shoe designed in 1996 to be seen from the cheap seats and drains the color out of it. What remains is volume from shape alone: puffed letters along the sidewall, view Air units underfoot, and a low-top cut the original never offered. Nike Japan’s listing for the style places Air units at the heel, midfoot and forefoot and gives Vietnam as the country of manufacture.

Signal. What happened: Nike gave its low-top Air More Uptempo an all-black “Triple Black” colorway. Exact object: Nike Air More Uptempo Low “Triple Black,” style code IM6649-001, colorway Black/Black/Black. When and where: Japan rel date of October 11, 2025, at ¥23,980 including tax; US pricing was reported between $160 and $170, with timing listed as fall 2025. Source: Nike’s product pages, GOAT’s IM6649-001 listing, and a Japan market rel notice. Why it matters: the Uptempo’s identity is its lettering, and this pair shows what that lettering looks like with no color behind it.

from

The Air More Uptempo debuted in 1996 from the drawing board of Wilson Smith, who pulled from pop art, train graffiti and an architecture project he had worked on. The challenge was to announce the Air cushioning that ran visibly from toe to heel, since the Uptempo carried more Air than anything Nike had made before it, and the answer was to spell the word out in 3M lettering across the lateral sidewall. On the medial side Smith flipped the lettering to run the other direction, lining it up with the Air unit, which is split into forefoot, midfoot and heel sections. He has described the mid-90s as a bigger-than-life moment, and the shoe was sized to match. GOAT’s listing for IM6649-001 credits Smith as the designer.

Scottie Pippen wore the shoe through the Chicago Bulls‘ 72-win season that year, which brought him a fourth NBA title and a second Olympic gold medal. For the playoffs he settled on the plain black and white version, which he has likened to a suit and tie, a sign the team was ready to get down to business. That summer he took the design to the Atlanta Olympics in Team USA colors, white and navy, while a lighter takedown called the Air Much Uptempo ran alongside it. Pippen has said the Uptempo struck him as overwhelming when he first saw it.

The shoe’s profile grew quickly. Pippen’s own signature line, the Air Pippen, arrived in 1997, the year the Uptempo also appeared on screen in George of the Jungle, and print campaigns, including a periodic table advertisement, tied the shoe to him. The original black and white colorway has since returned in 2016, 2020 and 2023, with a further return listed for September 25, 2026 at $170.

For most of its life the Uptempo was a high-top. The first Low version in the model’s history arrived in 2023 through Yoon Ahn’s AMBUSH, the Tokyo label, and a second drop that September added a mostly black pair with white details alongside another in purple and green. Both carried collide brand into a Tokyo-based unisex label that the LVMH Prize named a 2017 finalist.

Nike has since carried the Low into its regular line. Nike’s own listing for the silhouette shows the Black/Metallic Silver/Photon Dust pair (FZ3055-001) at $160, and the page prices another Low colorway at $170. It describes Air cushioning, a padded collar and elastic straps over the tongue that let the shoes be worn laced or unlaced, with Max Air units carried over from the performance original, a foam midsole and a rubber outsole. Nike’s copy pitches the shoe for turning heads on and off the court.

Blackout treatments were already familiar territory by then. The 2017 Supreme connection, nicknamed the Suptempo, came in Red/White, Gold/White and Triple Black. A grade-school Triple Black Uptempo (FV2264-001) followed in 2023, with visible Air only in the heel at the smaller size. The Low’s own Black/Metallic Silver/Photon Dust pair (FZ3055-001) was listed with a September 20, 2024 date overseas and an October 5, 2024 date in Japan.

In Japan the pair carried an October 11, 2025 release date and a price of ¥23,980 including tax, though one Japan list paired that date with October 20, apparently a second window. Overseas, timing was listed as fall 2025, with October 1 appear in some listing, while US pricing was reported at $160 early on and $170 in later coverage after Nike’s price increases. A US date was not confirmed by Nike in the material reviewed, and some coverage also circulated the nickname Black Cat for the pair. The Japan price matched that of a Flax/Wheat colorway (IM6649-700), built in suede and textile, which had reached Japan on September 6, five weeks ahead of the black pair.
