A decade-old recording, a Brazilian soul sample, and the sound of two gen of Los Angeles rap lock in.

Late last week, the algorithm served up a reminder that the Los Angeles rap ecosystem still runs on a different kind of time. Nipsey Hussle and Bino Rideaux relled PROLIFIC, a 15-track joint album that arrived eight years after Hussle’s Victory Lap and seven years after his passing. The project is a posthumous collaboration pieced together from recording the two made together years ago, and its lead single, “500 Horses,” is the kind of track that makes you wonder what else is sit in the vault.

The story of PROLIFIC isn’t just about new music; it’s about the endurance of a creative partner. Bino Rideaux, a fellow Los Angeles native, had already shown with Hussle on the 2017 project No Pressure and appeared on Hussle’s Slauson Boy 2 mixtape. According to Bino, the recordings that make up PROLIFIC were laid down nearly a decade ago . The album was built from the ground up by the two, a point emphasised by Hussle’s brother and manager, Samiel ‘Blacc Sam’ Asghedom: “This is the exact body of work Nipsey envisioned, built with Bino from top to bottom”.

The release gives fans a glimpse into a specific era of Hussle’s creative process, one that existed between the mixtape grind and the mainstream breakthrough of Victory Lap. The album is a 15-track beast, feature show from the likes of Cardi B, Ty Dolla $ign, James Fauntleroy, and Static Major. These features are a testament to Hussle’s reach and the respect he commanded across genres.

“500 Horses” is the standout, and not just because of its title. The track runs for 3 minutes and 48 seconds and sits squarely in the middle of the album’s A-side . It is a hardcore hip-hop record with a melodic undertow, driven by production from a team that includes Amaire Johnson, Mike & Keys, and MyGuyMars, with mix handle by the legend Derek Ali .

What gives the song its unique texture is the sample. The track interpolates “Esquinas,” a 1984 song by the legendary Brazilian artist Djavan . It’s a deep cut that connects the grit of Los Angeles rap to the sophistication of MPB and jazz, creating a bridge between different trad. It is a fit choice for an artist like Hussle, who always seem to be operant on condition of a different intellectual plane, connect dots that others didn’t even see. The song is also notable as one of several tracks on the album that reimagine classic sounds; “Sacrifices,” for example, flips Annie Lennox’s “No More I Love You’s”.

While PROLIFIC gives listeners new verses from a legend, the conversation around the album inevitably turns to legacy. The album’s rel has already sparked discussions about what else might be out there. The Rap Life playlist on Apple Music featured “500 Horses” at the top of its rotation, signal its immediate impression. Critics have already weighed in, calling “All Summer” a potential summer anthem and praising “Miami Off The Plane” as one of the project’s best tracks.

It is easy to get caught up in the what-ifs. What if Hussle were still here? What other music would he have made? But PROLIFIC offers a different perspective, one that focuses on what was. The album is a piece of history, a time capsule of a creative partner that was cut short. As Bino Rideaux put it, “It’s an honor to have footprints alongside the greatest”. “500 Horses” isn’t just a song; it’s a reminder that the music was always the point.
