The listing sits with Arte Contemporary, Miyota, Nagano. The same gallery’s 2025 solo and a 2025 Hamptons fair booth are on the artist’s exhibition line. 2026 also holds Diary, Light’s Diary at Sendai Mitsukoshi and a Daydream show at Abeno Harukas in Osaka.

Toyoda was born in Ehime in 1986 and finished Kurashiki University’s Department of Fine Arts in 2009. Arte Contemporary’s statement on the oil is specific: sand matiere as a base, light behaving like particles, scatter on a fine surface, a gradient that reads as memory. That is craft, not poetry pasted on. Sand in the gesso or ground gives tooth. Oil sits on it and does not go mirror-flat. Stand to the side and the color shifts. That is why a close-up of cider can hold a wall. The drink is simple. The surface is not.

The same ground appears across 2024–2026 titles on the gallery page: Ferry, Skirt, Parasol, a boy on a father’s shoulder, Ice cream. Cider is one noun in that list. The method does not change when the subject is a bottle or a glass. The crop stays tight. Background drops away.

Ehime, then Kurashiki, then a practice that keeps returning to objects you could hold. Not history painting. Not abstraction without a name. Cider, candy, coffee, pancake, melon in earlier years. The close-up is the ethic. If the thing is ordinary, the paint has to make the ordinary stop.

A convenience store at night and red fingernails are the gallery’s examples of that stop. Cider belongs with them. A drink that is cheap in a Japanese fridge becomes an 80 cm square. That scale is the decision. Small would be a study. Eighty is a claim that the can or the glass is enough.

Miyota is a mountain-side town in Nagano prefecture. Arte Contemporary’s address is Shiono, Miyota. Hamptons 2025 put the same studio on a fair wall. Sendai Mitsukoshi and Abeno Harukas put it in department-store galleries, the Japanese circuit for living painters who sell to a walk-in public. Cider exists inside that circuit, not inside a rumor mill.
