DRIFT

Karhu, a Finnish sports brand established in 1916, has been at the forefront of athletic innovation and design for over a century. From its humble beginnings as a small workshop in Helsinki, Karhu has evolved into a globally recognized brand, renowned for its high-quality running shoes, sports equipment, and apparel.

The Early Years: 1916-1950

Karhu was originally founded as “Oy Urheilutarpeita” in 1916 and was later renamed “Karhu,” meaning bear in Finnish, in 1920. The company’s initial focus was on producing discuses, javelins, and running shoes for local athletes. During this time, Karhu introduced the iconic three stripes trademark, which would later be sold to Adidas in 1952.

Innovation and Expansion: 1950-1990

Throughout the mid-20th century, Karhu continued to innovate and expand its product line. In the 1950s, the company introduced its first line of ski equipment, which quickly gained popularity in Finland and abroad. The 1960s saw Karhu develop new running shoe technologies, such as the “Air Cushion” midsole system, which was patented in 1976.

In the 1980s, Karhu experienced significant growth, expanding its international presence and establishing itself as a major player in the global sports market. The company continued to develop new products, including the “Fulcrum” technology, which improved the stability and responsiveness of its running shoes.

The Modern Era: 1990-Present

The 1990s marked a period of change for Karhu, as the company shifted its focus back to its core competency: running shoes. This decision proved to be a success, as Karhu’s running shoes garnered praise for their quality and performance. In 2008, Karhu was sold to a group of investors organized under “Karhu Holding B.V.,” which has since guided the brand through a resurgence in the global market.

Today, Karhu continues to build on its rich history of innovation and design, producing high-quality running shoes, apparel, and accessories that cater to athletes and casual wearers alike. The company’s commitment to excellence has solidified its position as an iconic Finnish sports brand with a loyal following around the world.

Karhu’s century-long journey from a small workshop in Helsinki to a globally recognized sports brand is a testament to its unwavering dedication to innovation, quality, and performance. As the company looks to the future, it remains committed to pushing the boundaries of athletic design and delivering products that embody the spirit of Finnish sporting excellence.
