The Mind 002 Goes Flyknit In Smoke

The tell is under the foot. Twenty-two foam nodes on a Nike Mind 002 press up as you walk. Nike calls that work the Mind Science Department: sensory areas of the brain, presence, a pregame shoe that is not a racer. This pair puts that sole under Flyknit and paints the whole thing smoke. Black / Anthracite / Dark Smoke Grey. IR2176-002. Japan date on the brief: 3 October 2026.

The 002 is the laced sibling of the Mind 001 mule. Same node count. The lace is there to hold the foot down onto the nubs. Flyknit is the upper that Hiroshi Fujiwara first parked on this last for Fragment, then Nike pulled in-line. IR2176 is the Flyknit family. 002 on the end of this code is the black-grey chapter.

Nike’s Mind line did not come from a racing last. It came from a lab brief: what if the shoe’s job was to keep you in the room before the game starts. The 001 is a slide you can kick off in a tunnel. The 002 is a shoe  so the nodes stay in contact when you walk to the bus. Soft foam still cushion. The nodes still move. Stretch fabric on the footbed lets them work without chewing the sock.

Flyknit, launched as a show knit in 2012, is the upper that makes the 002 feel less like a science project and more like a sock with a strange floor. Fragment put that knit on the 002 first, black and grey, industrial heel text. In-line Flyknit followed in white/volt, then fossil stone and plum, then light bone and gold. Black, anthracite, and dark smoke grey is the quiet end of that list. No volt. No plum. Smoke on smoke, nodes still view if you turn the shoe over.

US Flyknit 002s have sat at $145. Japan standard (non-Flyknit) 002s have sat at ¥20,900. A live Nike.jp ticket for IR2176-002 was not captured here.

The original 002 upper is a perforated knit shell. Flyknit changes the grain. Density shifts across the vamp. Air moves. Weight drops relative to the first build. The sole does not change its job. Twenty-two nodes, independently moving, still the product.

Reviewers of the base 002 split on that job. Some like the ground feel. Some find the nubs noisy after an hour. Stability scores are not the point of the shoe. APMA accepted the model as foot-health friendly on some listings. None of that makes IR2176-002 a trainer. It is still a pregame and a walk.

Heel pull tab stays. Laces stay. The Swoosh on Flyknit 002s has often gone small and tonal. On this color it should disappear into anthracite. If it flashes chrome, that will be the only jewel.
