The Richmond rapper’s latest single trades some of his usual chaos for something quieter, arriving in the middle of an already massive 2026.
Nettspend isn’t slowing his rel pace down even after a year already packed with output. The Richmond, Virginia native, born Gunner Shepardson, relled his debut studio album Early Life Crisis back in March, featuring OsamaSon and YoungBoy Never Broke Again, and has kept singles arriving steadily since. He most recently pushed out the massive HIM compilation before turning around with “sober,” a new single produced by reklus1ve that arrives with a black-and-white music video feature show from his mother and OsamaSon.

At 19, Nettspend has moved fast even by the standards of an internet-native rap scene built on speed. His 2023 breakout “Drankdrankdrank,” recorded in his mother’s car in about ten minutes, turned into a viral moment that pulled him into rooms far outside where he started, including runway shows and industry parties well before most of his peers had a booking agent. That trajectory has continued in a near-constant stream of mixtapes, EPs and one-off singles, “sober” being only the latest entry in a catalog that rarely pauses long enough to be summarized in full.

What makes “sober” worth pausing on isn’t volume, it’s restraint. Nettspend’s music has typically leaned into rage-adjacent production: buzzy, heavily processed vocals stacked over overwhelming low end and drum programming built to hit as hard as possible. “sober” keeps pieces of that vocabulary intact, the voice is still distorted, the bass and drums still land with weight, but the melodic bed underneath all of it is lighter and more ethereal than what usually carries his more aggressive material. According to coverage of the release, the track opens with a glowing organ before the production slices it apart and folds it into the beat, a more patient entrance than the genre’s usual straight-into-impress approach.

The vocal melodies haven’t disappeared, they’ve just been based, function more as a steady thread through the track than as another layer competing for space with the low end. That’s a meaningful shift for an artist whose appeal has often been inseparable from sheer intensity. “sober” isn’t going to convert listeners who’ve written off his style entirely, the buzzy vocal treatment and maximalist low end are still very much part of the identity here, but it does suggest Nettspend testing how far his sound can stretch into something more atmospheric without losing what makes it recognizably his. Coming right after a compilation-sized release, it reads less like a detour and more like evidence that his 2026 run still has room left to surprise.
