Twenty Years After Aang, the Avatar World Gets Its First Villain Who Never Asked to Be One

Pavi is an Earthbender, the new Avatar after Korra, and in “Seven Havens” that title makes her the most hated person alive.

San Diego Comic Con has always been where the Avatar franchise likes to make its big reveals, and this year the panel technically belonged to something else. The Thursday, July 23 Hall H session was billed as a showcase for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, the animated film that hits Paramount+ the very next day after a shortened theatrical run for awards consideration. But partway through, the studio pivoted to its next chapter. Franchise co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko took the stage to confirm that Avatar: Seven Havens, the third full length animated series set in this world, now has a premiere date: October 9, streaming globally on Paramount+.

That date is not neutral. Multiple outlets covering the panel noted that October 9 was originally reserved for Avatar Aang’s own streaming premiere, before that release got moved up to July 25 following an online leak earlier this year. Handing the freed up date to Seven Havens reads like the kind of scheduling decision a network makes when it wants a date to still mean something rather than sit empty. It also lands close to a genuinely loaded anniversary stretch for the property, with Nickelodeon marking twenty years since the original Avatar: The Last Airbender first aired in 2005 and twelve years since The Legend of Korra wrapped its run in 2014.

Along with the date, Paramount+ released the first teaser trailer for Seven Havens during the panel, giving fans an actual look at the show for the first time since it received a series order back in February 2025.

The teaser is short, but it is doing a specific job: establishing that this is not the world Aang or Korra lived in anymore. It opens on ruined skylines and a Spirit World that looks torn rather than merely mysterious, before settling on its central image, a young Earthbender who does not yet understand what has been placed on her shoulders. Coverage of the panel described the footage as leaning into a genuinely apocalyptic tone, a marked shift for a franchise whose past entries, even at their darkest, tended to frame the Avatar as a figure of hope.

That inversion is the hook. Rather than being celebrated the way Aang and Korra were, Pavi is hunted. The trailer teases pursuit from both human factions and spirits, alongside glimpses of her long lost twin sister, who becomes her only real ally as the two try to piece together where their powers actually came from.

For a licensed placement, this slot would carry a still frame from the teaser showing Pavi in the ruined Spirit World landscape, sourced and captioned as an official Paramount+ press image rather than pulled from a fan reupload.

Every prior Avatar series has spent its early episodes establishing the Avatar as the one figure capable of holding a fractured world together. Seven Havens flips that premise entirely. Per the official logline, the show is set in a world “shattered by a devastating cataclysm,” one where both the physical world and the Spirit World have been torn apart. A young Earthbender named Pavi discovers she is the next Avatar in the line after Korra, and in this particular era that title does not mark her as a savior. It marks her as humanity’s destroyer.

Hunted by human and spirit forces alike, Pavi has to team up with her long lost twin sister, Nisha, to trace the origin of their powers and, ideally, save what remains of civilization’s last strongholds, the “seven havens” that give the show its title, before they collapse entirely. It is a premise that borrows the bones of the earlier shows (a young bender coming into an identity she never asked for, a fractured world in need of balance) while swapping out the mythology’s usual optimism for something closer to survival horror.

Structurally, Seven Havens follows the format established by its predecessors. The series carries a 26 episode order, split into two “Books” of thirteen episodes apiece, echoing the Book structure used in both the original Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

The voice cast announced alongside the trailer includes Saheli Khan as Pavi, the new Avatar at the center of the story, and Aishu Devan as Nisha, her twin sister and closest ally. Rounding out the principal cast are Akshay Khanna as Karthik, Major Curda as Jae, Sakina Jaffrey as Agam, Darren Barnet as Daemin, and Dianne Doan as Zi. Dee Bradley Baker, a franchise veteran whose work stretches back to the original series, voices two roles this time around, Geet and Ruhi, continuing the show’s tradition of leaning on animal companion characters (Geet appears to fill something like the emotional role Momo and Naga once played, here reported as a cat monkey rather than a lemur or polar bear dog).

Jae, per early character breakdowns, is an Airbender who serves as Pavi’s mentor and roommate in the city of Alora, giving the ensemble at least one figure meant to anchor Pavi emotionally the way Iroh or Tenzin did for their respective Avatars.

Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the duo fans and press shorthand as “Bryke,” created the original Avatar: The Last Airbender together and return here as co-creators and executive producers under their Avatar Studios banner, the division Nickelodeon formed in 2021 specifically to expand the franchise. Ethan Spaulding, a longtime Avatar universe director, serves as executive producer, with Sehaj Sethi as co-executive producer. Nickelodeon and Avatar Studios are producing the series together.

It is worth sitting with how long this timeline actually is. The original Avatar: The Last Airbender premiered on Nickelodeon in 2005 and ran three seasons before ending in 2008. The Legend of Korra followed from 2012 to 2014. Seven Havens arrives roughly twenty one years after Aang first appeared on screen and twelve years after Korra’s finale, making it, by a wide margin, the longest gap between mainline entries in the franchise’s history. DiMartino and Konietzko are, in effect, revisiting a world they built two decades ago with the benefit of two more decades of storytelling instincts, and the tonal turn toward a genuinely broken, cataclysm scarred setting suggests they are not interested in simply repeating the beats that worked before.

Seven Havens is not launching into a shh moment for the property. Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, the animated film also produced under Avatar Studios, screens at San Diego Comic Con on July 24 before its Paramount+ streaming debut on July 25, alongside a limited awards qualifying theatrical run in New York and Los Angeles rather than the wider release originally planned. Separately, Netflix’s live action Avatar: The Last Airbender series, which recasts the original story with actors including Kiawentiio, Gordon Cormier, and Ian Ousley, is moving into a third season, giving the franchise two very different television tracks running in parallel: a live action adaptation of the original story on one streamer, and an entirely new animated chapter on another.

The broader twentieth anniversary push also includes Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, a new fighting game built around characters from the original series and The Legend of Korra, which launched July 23 on Steam, PlayStation 5, and both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, with the Xbox Series X and S version delayed to September 3 due to a late development issue. Add in the long running Avatar: Braving the Elements rewatch podcast, a touring live orchestra show, and an ongoing comics line, and Seven Havens becomes one piece of a franchise that is, at the moment, expanding on more fronts simultaneously than at almost any point in its history.

The most concrete detail still shifting is rollout format. Several outlets initially reported that all 26 episodes would drop at once on October 9, mirroring the binge model Netflix used for its live action Avatar series. At least one report has since walked that back, citing a source close to the production who said the exact release strategy, whether that means a full season dump, a split Book by Book rollout, or a weekly cadence, is still being finalized. Given how firmly the two Book structure is baked into the show’s design, a split release later this year or into 2027 remains plausible even with a hard October 9 start date locked in.

Also unconfirmed: how much of the film Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, premiering just weeks before Seven Havens, will directly inform the new series’ Spirit World mythology, and whether any characters from that film carry over. Nickelodeon has framed the film and the series as sibling projects representing “the next evolution of storytelling from Avatar Studios,” language that suggests some connective tissue, though no specifics have been detailed publicly.
